Everytime I'm trying to burn a audio-cd using NERO the burn process fails at 4%. I can burn data dvd's and cd's without any problems.

    I have a dvd-writer of Philips (SPD6000L1).
    I use NERO OEM Suite (Burning Rom 6 - SE / 6.6.0.17F)
    I've tried several cd-r's and cd-rw's.

Below in this message I included the information in the log-file.

I really hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

    Hi.

First, edit your post and remove your name and email address. Click the paper/pencil icon in the upper right of your post to enter edit mode.

The DMA is off on your Philips drive and may be causing the problem. Use Device Manager to uninstall the burner and it should be reinstalled upon restart with DMA transfer mode on. Here's a guide:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

The media you're using isn't very good either. If you continue to have problems, try a different brand. Try some Sony or Verbatim CDs.

You might also check to see if there's an update for your burner's firmware.

I reinstalled the burner, and indeed the DMA transfer mode is on now.
The burner is my primary IDE-channel and the cd-reader is my secundary IDE-channel. The DMA is off now on my secundary drive. The mode is now "PIO". Is that how it should be?

Back to the burner, I've just tried to burn a cd-rw of Sony and the burn process ended succesfully. Again the other cd's (I still have a dozen of expensive lightscribe discs with the label 'Primeon') failed to be burned. In the log-file I can read on both drives the DMA is off. I don't understand that because under 'properties' of the Primary IDE channel I can really read the mode is DMA ('if availlable').

    Thanks

From the initial log you provided, your hard drive is the only device on your primary IDE channel. Both CD drives are on the secondary IDE channel. The burner is the slave and the cdrom is the master drive, which is the opposite of most configurations. If it works, fine, but you might try switching the cables to the two drives. You may have to switch the locations of the drives if the cable isn't long enough or has enough play. Unless your drives are configured as cable select, you'll need to change the jumpers on the drives to master and slave. The documentation that came with the drives will show you the correct jumper setting. Sometimes there is already a diagram on the drive itself.

When reset both drives should be back in DMA mode if the drive is capable of DMA (usually Ultra DMA mode 2). If they aren't, there is likely a communication problem on the bus causing one or both of the drives to revert to PIO mode or the drive isn't capable of such. In the initial log, the CDROM was in DMA and the burner wasn't. So we know both are DMA capable.

DMA if available is what the setting should be but the current transfer mode should probably say Ultra DMA Mode 2 when DMA is on and working. If your log says DMA is off, the burners are reverting to the slower mode because of comm errors or DMA is actually on and being misreported to or by Nero. You have to go by what the status is as reported by Device Manager.

I doubt the Primeon media is made by a high quality manufacturer. Their DVDs are from very poor quality suppliers with the exception of Ritek. It's a pretty good guess their CDs won't be any better.

    Thanks Laddyboy,
I followed your instructions. My burner is the 'master' now and my cd-rom is a 'slave' now. I changed the jumpers for them too.

I'm now sure DMA is 'on' on my secundary drives! Even when I reset my both drives. It sais "Ultra DMA Mode 2" for both drives. That is a good sign isn't it?

Unfortunately when I tried to burn a Nero compilation again it could not succesfully end "disc at once"...

I tried it with a Primeon cd and a cd-rw of Sony.

Bigfatboy, I already installed this "Intelligent Agent" programm.
This is what I see when I try to update:

    ....................Installed version...Recent version............
    Philips SPD6000L1:......L5P2............................? Unknown
    Ph. Intell. agent:......1.0..................1.0........V Up-to-date

So it seems not to be able to update the software for this burner. I can't find any updates on the internet anyway for this burner.

Having the DMA recognized on both drives is a good thing indeed.

See if you can get your burner to burn data to a CD using the built-in support in WinXP.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306524

You upgraded to Nero 6.6.1.4 which is not a good version. Version 6.6.0.18 is the last stable version of Nero. Version 6.6.1.4 sucks for the most part. I'm not sure that's the problem here though, but I'd still uninstall it, run the Nero 6 Clean Tool, the Nero Registry Checker and Driver Clean Tool, and then install version 6.6.0.18 from the following two packages:

    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Driver_CleanTool_and_RegistryChecker.html

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Burning a data-cd or data-dvd doesn't seem to be a problem. Both WinXP and Nero work good at that point.

I also tried to burn an audio-cd without Nero to see what happens. I used both Media Player and Realplayer and at first sight the burning processes did succesfully end.
But I was dissapointed to hear a very strange and loud (short) noice at the end of most of the tracks on the burried audio-cd's.

I really wonder what is wrong here...

It's a pity I can not let you hear what noice I mean.

    Here's what happens in short:

    1) Burning audio-cd's with Nero happen to be abrubtly ended at 4% (both Sony and Primeon discs) ("could not end disc-at-once"). In some cases when a compilation is new the burning process on a Sony disc end succesfully. When a compilation is saved and closed and after that opened again the burning process fails with every cd-r I'm trying.

    2) Burning audio-cd's with Windows Media Player and Realplayer that are succesfully ended result in an annoying noice at the end of most of the tracks.

I'm not sure what's causing your problem. Have you tried burning faster than 8X at say 16X, 24X, or 32X? I noticed some of the burns were at 4X. CDs are usually burned at pretty fast speeds. DVDs are another story w/r to write speed although the X speed measurements do not translate 1:1 between the two different media anyway. I noticed some of the media is from Moser Baer which is a poor quality manufacturer. I'm guessing that's the Primeon CD.

Did you change Nero versions to 6.6.0.18?

I'm always using a write speed of 4X because I always understood it's better to use a lower speed (the lower your chance for errors). The Sony disc I use is a cd-rw and its maximum speed is 4X.

I haven't removed my current version of Nero yet because I discovered the problem with WMP and Realplayer. This problem shouldn't have anything to do with my Nero version.

But after completing this message I will remove my current version of Nero and replace it for the one you mentioned.

    I'll be back.

Laddyboy, I can not install the Nero version I found in your link. During the installation I am asked for a serial number. What do I need to do now?

Use the same serial number as for the other Nero 6 versions you had. If not, go back to 6.6.0.17 oem or try the trial version of Nero 7. At this point the only other things I can suggest are:

    - try different CD media.

    - Go back to an earlier restore point.

    - install your burner in another computer and see if it works correctly there.

    - backup your data, reformat your hard drive, and reinstall the OS and application software.
