I want to build a new computer just for burning my budget it is 1k I want to use quality parts. This machine is going to be used just for burning DVD's so I don't need a audio card and vid. My other idea was to use my 1ghz with 512mb and rip with that and burn with a 8x plextor via 2.0 usb which one would be quicker or faster my ideal goal is to rip in less than 10 mins and burn in less than 20 mins 30 tops
That 1 ghz pc will be a lot slower on the larger dvd-9 movies that you'll backup. a 4x burn speed should be around 15 mins or so,but encoding to the harddrive will take longer.Faster processor means a faster rip time. Some dvd encoding programs like dvd shrink will max out your processor. I've got a 598 mhz p3 celeron and I can encode and burn a regular dvd-5 movie in under 40 mins. But when I slap in a dvd-9 movie,it'll have to be compressed to fit a standard dvd-5,these speed really slows down during the encoding. The more compression/the longer it takes. My last dvd-9 to dvd-5 backups took around 9-12 hours using the quality enhancements of dvd shrink ! On my main pc: You can see my specs in my sig, I can do a dvd-5 movie well under 20 mins total. Those larger dvd-9 movies take anywhere from 30 mins to 90 mins-depending on compression. Also some quality enhancements to help on quality can really magnefy that encoding time, the smaller processors will really suffer. I'm contemplating on putting another half gig of pc3200 to see it It will speed me up any.
I'm tired of buying memory. I just burned up 2 and a half gigs worth in my last athlon barton 3000+ pc this year, UGH!.Along with 1 mobo,3 power supplies and some other stuff. That 3000+ backed up dvds quicker than this 64+ 3300+ by a few minutes, but it did have a 1 gig stick of pc2700. I still have that one sitting below my backup pc.Maybe this winter I can get her up and running again!
so what would be the quickest way of doing a rip and burn. on a box in terms of hardware how fast does the proc have to be and how much ram do i need.
you should have at least 512 MB to be on the safe side. My 384 MB pc rips dvd-9 movies on 85% compression in 18 minutes. i have no idea why it's so fast. it has a p4 1.6 ghz processsor.
