I am having problems with the computer that I got from a friend of mine. It worked pretty well for a while and I got a new drive (Samsung SH-S182D DVDR drive) because it didn't have one before. Trying to make a long story short the drive came with the installation cd and it had nero on it I installed nero and everything seemed to work o.k. then after a while nero seemed to get slower and slower and eventuelly it really stopped working or it was taking so long I figured it wasn't going to work. My windows media beta 11 would only burn data discs and not audio. so i downloaded roxio and it worked and then it stopped too. The programs are all horribly slow (if they decide to work at all. I uninstalled and reinstalled nero version 6 ultra (after i upgraded v6) to no help. Yesterday i uninstalled all the ide channels, controllers, and disc drives because i assumed on reboot the comp. would pick them up. which it did all with yellow exclamation points by them. the exc. points went away but it kept telling me found new hardware in the little pop-up window and to install it. so i kept trying to install all of it for the (drives, ide controller, and ide channels) and it kept saying that it could not find the appropriate software for any of it. (also my ide channels are not listed as primary and secondary they both just say ide channel) i wanted to see if DMA was turned on but there is no advanced settings tab so i can't seem to check it. (windows xp) i have tried almost everything and i can't seem to figure it out so i finally decided to post here because noone had all the same problems at the same time. sorry so long but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

I have done what you suggested. I need Nero to help run my dvd shrink/decrypter program so I hope this works. On a side note everytime my computer is rebooted the found new hardware bubble pops up at the bottom and the install wizard automatically starts for the two drives, the two ide channels, and the ide controller. The wizards never work if i try to run them though. They all keep saying hardware was not properly installed because the wizard could not find the appropriate software. Also do i have to have both of my drives selected for master and slave? I believe i have them on the pins that allow my computer to pick which is which. Conflicting maybe? Last but not least, my ide channels are not listed as primary and secondary under the ATAPI devices. They are both listed as ide channel. if i click on them the it says primary or secondary. is that a problem? thanks for the help

I have changed my disc drives now so that one is master and one is slave. I hope you meant disc drives and not hard drives, because that is what i meant. i need to put nero back on as soon as possible so i can use my dvd programs. Once again thanks for the help.

Ok now are your drives recognised in hardware manager?

my drives are recognized the same way they were before. there has been no change. If i click on the drive location in the device manager the two names of the cd/dvd rom drives come up but not listed as primary or secondary. Also when i go further into the driver details the manufacturer says unknown for both and the driver is unknown for both. my ide channels are only listed as primary and secondary when i go further into the details for them as well. Not sure if this makes a difference or not. Maybe it's just the way that my computer lists them. Also my computer is a Dell Dimension 8250 running windows Xp w/ a pentium 4 processor. I noticed that i can still use the drives to burn cds. Media player actually worked faster than it has before and finally let me burn an audio cd. But this may be a one time thing. Also when i restart my computer the bubbles still pop up at the bottom right task bar saying new hardware found (both rom drives, both ide channels, and ide controller) and to install, but it never lets me. Always says software could not be found.
