Hey, newbie here, having som eserious difficulty burning DVDs. I'll try to explain my problems to the best of my ability and hopefully somebody can help. I am using Maxell DVD+R. My driver is ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 Firmware version G7H9 This whole firmware update thing has me confused. I'm not very good at all of this technical talk, so if someone could help me through that if I need to update my firmware. (Not sure) I've tried burning with Sonic and just get a geberic error message. Then I tried ImgBurn. I used Img Tool Classic to create the .ISO file to burn with ImgBurn. Hi Wes13 I 2nd what dialysis1 said - dump the discs you are using. Better to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan only Sony, Fuji or Maxell. Looks like your firmware can use an update too. This will help you drive recognizes and use the correct write strategies for media. It's best to keep the firmware up to date. Your's should be the last one in this link - G7Z9. @dialysis1 Yes imgburn and decrypter can check for a firmware update. It will take you here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php The problem is though the way this drive is identified - it will come up 'Sorry. The specified string could not be found.' Heck even iomagic has several w/ this same string id.
So the disks I am using are junk. OK. Thanks for that info. Guess I should have checked here before buying them!! How do you use ImgBurn to create the .ISO file?
IMGBurn will burn an image file (ISO), you use an transcoder/encoder to make the ISO file! Shrink, Nero, CloneDVD are some transcoders, DVDRebuilder is one great encoder that will make ISO files.
@Wes13 Still need the firmware up date too. Even with good media you might still have some problems. 16x speed media can give drives a problem if the firmware doesn't contain the media codes to properly identify and write to it. thank you Binkie for the correction...... I just updated my ImGBurn and was reading all about the new [bold]Build[/bold] feature! how nice.... it's becoming a new DVDDecrypter! hahahahahaha no as much but has most of the features now! Hope Lightning_UK doesn't go too far as he did with DVDDecrypter (it's still that good) and get blocked again! you know history does repeat itself!
@binkie7: Updated firmware successfully. I think. I will try this all again tomorrow and let you know the outcome. I see that ImgBurn has that now. I will have to get that version.
Ok Wes13 -keep us posted - good, bad or otherwise. When you open ImgBurn - look to the right - it will list your drive along with the current firmware version. That way you can tell if it was successful. Probably was after a reboot. @IHoe Nah doubt he will - I think macrovision slapped his fingers so he's watching it
OK, Update: My rip of one movie on my C drive was bad. I didn't notice it until after I sarted to watch the burn. I used DVD Shrink to pull it off along with RipIt4Me and the FixVTv or something like that? Second movie - Ripped with DVD Shrink alone and used the new version of ImgBurn with the Build feature. Watched the movie and it was fine. Now I was reading on how to get around some copy protected DVDs and that's why I used th RipIt4Me and the FixVtv. Maybe that was the problem with it? Anyone know of prblems with these programs? Anyways, I'll try another movie sometime and give another update on how this one turns out. Much thanks to all who helped in this thread!!

You can rip to your hard drive w/ DVDFab Decrypter (free) then open those files in Shrink and process as usual. http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm Or to make it almost one step - have AnyDVD running in the background with Shrink. Not free but has a 21 day free trial. http://slysoft.com Both programs are still updated and handle anything out there too. When you say the rip might have been bad - did you have playback problems? That would more than likely point to those CMC discs.
