    Hi --
Please pardon if I ask the obvious as I'm still much a rank beginner. Are there any good options for recording directly to MP3 format from a live line-in source through a PC sound card? I need to do some lengthy recordings and am chagrined by the size of teh WAV files that would need to be created as well as concerned about the reliability of teh software packages available for doing this. For perspective, it looks like I'm needing to do about 25 hours of spoken audio over three days. Mostly this is in 45 minute to 90 minute segments. I do have decent PC equipment -- WinXP, 2.4 GHz processor, large HD with lots of free space, a gig of RAM. Using a Soundblaster 16 PCI sound card with a line-in feed from a mixing board. Don't need high end audio quality -- just reliable encoding.

There are a lot of programs to do that.
I use Feurio, which is like free, and has a volume display.
First you have to setup the LAME_ENC.DLL encoder in Program Parameters -> MP3 Parameters (or any other MP3 codec you have in the system)
And then, you can record in MP3 format in Feurio CD-Manager -> Project Directory -> Record audio data.
