I would like to update my firmware also but there are 2 versions. So should go for the newest one or what. Nero info tool tells me I have IDE1008 but nothing more. On the IOmagic firmware site it has IDE1008_0059 and IDE1008_0060. So I guess the 0060 is the newest one if I upgrade if it screws up can I do something to get the old version back? I need to upgrade because I bought some Verbatim 16X DVD-R's and whenever I burn something with them my PC may freeze or the disc burns but has skipping problems and what not. This is the first time I've used this brand before so I don't know if it's the brand or what because when I used Maxell's and Ritek's I never had problems. Also if my burner only supports writing at 8X's should these 16X discs work if I burn slower than 8X? My firmware is really old. Version 0052 and all the website has is 0059 and 0060. So will I be safe?

EDIT: BTW my burning is an I/O Magic 8X DVD±RW. Nero infoTool does identify my drive as DVDRW IDE1008. Here is the link to the firmware download page... http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

yes, go with the 0060 as you mentioned, your drive probably just does not recognize the new 16x rated media properly...i'm almost CERTAIN that the newest updated firmware will resolve that issue~ :)

just make sure you don't "power down" during the flash, this is very important~! let the flasher complete ALL the way through until you get a "firmware updated...success...complete" or something along those lines, THEN reboot~ :)

it's fine to burn onto 16x rated media @ 8x or slower, AS LONG AS UR FIRMWARE on your drive supports it...good luck

Thanks...But, even if my firmware is the old 0052 updating to 0060 should work and not kill it. I guess I'm just scared of flashes because I flashed my bios and killed my mobo even though it was the correct....

well u just have to be careful when flashing, i did "fry" my mobo a few years ago due to an improperly done flash too, so i KNOW exactly where your concerns are coming from...it's a really crappy feeling, ur right~ :)

but, flashing a drive is MUCH easier/ or just as easy as flashing your bios...just make sure you dl the CORRECT one for your particular model burner...then follow the simple instructions step by step after you unzip the file/ or just double click the *.exe file that comes w/ the installer~ :)

i didn't bring up the "do not power down" to scare or intimidate you, i only stated it because when i first started out and did my 1st flash ever, i FRIED my drive because i shut down the computer because i THOUGHT something was wrong/that my pc just "froze up"; but it was actually just completing the "flashing process"...stupid me, i just turned it off and when i rebooted...NO MORE DRIVE~!, just a word of caution to NOT make the same mistake i did years ago, that's all~ :)

all i can say is...if you do NOT update your firmware for that drive you own, when newer and newer media are available on the market, there is a GOOD CHANCE your drive will NOT properly recognize ANY of them and you WILL be limiting yourself to only using the OLD STOCK 4x speed discs for your burns...WHY limit yourself when you have SOOOO MANY other possibilities out there? but hey, it's YOUR CHOICE...i know for a FACT that once the firmware is properly updated, you WILL be much happier with the burner and the various medias you throw at it in the future :)

    docTY~

OK, I tried to flash and got an error. The first time I used the newest 0060 flash and got an error. Next I tried the old 0159 flash and got the same error...

This firmware can be used on below drives :
    (1) DVDRW IDE1008 .
    Check Sum : 8DE
    Please wait a minute.....
    Execute command errorA!! 5/20/ 0
    Flashing is incorrect!!

EDIT: OK so I tried to reflash again with the oldest version they have on the website 1008IM_V0058 and got the error below...

    It's only for
    (1) DVDRW USB1008UI .
    (2) DVDRW IDE1008 .
    Check Sum : 6058
    Please wait a minute.....
    Execute command errorA!! 5/20/ 0
    Flashing is incorrect!!

[bold]Kivory if you and anyone know what is going on I'll appreciate it. I closed all programs running and tried and still the same thing...[/bold]

OK, I got it to work but now nero infotool says my write speed is 8X and my read speed is 4X. What happened? I noticed my other regular CD burner in this PC is slower also read speed is 12X which is suppose to be 52X I believe and the write speed says 40X.

EDIT: I just burned ok with it but I only burned at 4X. When I had the media in before I burned it said it only supported 2X and 4X even though this is Verbatim 16X DVD-R's so I don't know what is going on regarding that....

    Hi there,

I guess I must be lucky, since I have never ever blown nothing while flashing firmware.

I flashed tons of motherboards and burners over the year (Being a tech).
