Hello: Being new to this forum, please excuse me if this question has been asked before. I have purchased a number of software packages including DX Copy, Record Now, and others, all promissing to be able to burn rented DVDs. But once installed I have not had any luck doing so. Is it me, or the software note being able to do what it promissed.

Recently I was told that I could download shrink and that I would not have this problem again. I have downloaded a few of the different versions and again have the same problems.

Is there any free software out there which once installed let me burn DVDs. Please inform me of only those that you have installed and know to work. I am tired of being suggested to try this and that only to find out they don't work.

Finally is there other types of software that must be downloaded with the burning software to make it work. I am currently using Windows xp and have a BENQ external burner.

    Thank you

Not trying to be rude but maybe if you posted this question in the newbie section someone would assist you.

Do you have a DVD Burner? You need a dvd burner first of all.
Second, copying rented dvd's is totally illegal. But if you have purchased the original there are guides that are super - have been a newbie before, they work wonders.

Like ILHS86 said, it is illegal, punishable to the full extent of the law, perhaps you oughta rethink it, unless of course like ILHS86 also said, if you own it, it should be alright <?:?>
but personaly, i use DVD Shrink, DVD Decryptor (the great gugga-mugga) and of course AnyDVD (or DVD43 for freeware).
i have had absoloutley no troubles whatsoever on my quests.
keep in mind again, in Aust. penalties of up to $53,000 per offence for copying hired/lended DVD's...

Not trying to step on any toes here, but the last DVD I looked at was $250,000 and/or 5 years in a federal prison. Just something to ponder nb830.

look, nb830 all we are trying to say is that you should watch what you post.
now, to continue, i guess you could try backing up with DVD Shrink, lotsa people like to use DVD Decrypter first before runnin it through shrink, i dont usualy do dis cause it usualy aint required, buts, if you are lazy like me you employ other softs to work along side you like AnyDVD or DVD43, both of which kinda carry out the same tasks, [bold]i recommend[/bold] less work needed.
any more help needed, just post...

Well, thats a nice example to welcome a newcomer with................

So why didn't you say that in the first place???????????????????

It pisses me off, when a newcomer makes a small mistake and then gets hounded for it, and the result is we won't see him again.

I suggest all you juniors, leave the rules and moderating to the [bold]Moderators[/bold], that way we can preserve the integrity of this site for being a pleasure to be involved with and not 'shirkin' every newcomer who slips up on his first post................

My rant over (not like me, but I was in the mood, I have had a bad day - time for a beer and a smoke).................

    @nb830

If you can, stay you'll benefit from it, and you'll have fun.
Just have a check on the rules before posting, that way you could avoid any unwanted responses.
We all have side stepped a few rules now and then, but the mods keep us in line (especially Nephilim - but I like it when he steps in, so masterful.....ooooh......)

So ignore whats gone on, post back with some answers to what andmerr asked and we'll see if we can help you out.
Just edit out the 'questionable' part from your original post and you'll be ok.................

We don't want to jump on anyone unless they are a Junior Member! If there is a problem with a newbie post, and there are lots, let a Moderator take care of it with the "report an offensive post".

We can just handle the technical issues.

Has anyone ever gone to jail for burning a few rentals for there own use?

hmm.. I don't understand it. How could anyone not be able to rip dvds with DVDShrink. Especially with the latest version, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure things out. I would say less than 1% of my backups required Anydvd to backup - The Grudge to name one. I had to use Apollo Copy to rip Die Hard with a vengeance which was hell to backup. I was able to rip Die Hard with Decryptor but still, Shrink couldn't even analzye it with or and without Anydvd. Apollo was there to save the day, thank you.

Andmerr & BaaBaa maybe you two should re-read my post again, 1st I told him to check burner and 2nd not to pirate and 3rd told him about guides, which was short and sweet and showed much more than you did.

I don't see anything wrong with any of the comments made by anyone regarding nb830's post. They were all pretty accurate. I get a lot of great info here, and i think that it's everyone's responsibility, as members, to protect the integrity of this site. His/her post was illegal and against forum rules... Most of those responses did offer help backing up owned copies of DVD's. It was TOO easy for him/her to read between the lines and get the help he/she was seeking. This forum is an invaluable tool for me, and I would hate to see anything happen to it.

IMO, a reaction like that denotes that he/she would have gotten the info and not reciprocated by contributing in the future.

    just my 2 cents....

The thing is that if a newbie says something that may be against the rules and another member hammers them for it, then the "old timers" are more likely to hammer the second party.

The rules are important but it is also important that everyone feels welcome here, especially new folks.

We have a mechanism to report "offensive posts" so that just the moderators can look at and evaluate the posts in question. This usually results in a newbie sticking around and helping out later on instead of:
As folks advance through the ranks here they get a certain sense of ownership. They feel like Afterdawn is home to them so they want to protect it. It is understandable when they jump on someone to try and protect this website. Note that the Members, Seniors and Addicts tend not to do this. For me it is the fact that new people are very important to the health of this site.

    @ frank

I got your point as well as the others. I didn't see it that way nor did I be rude to him. Actually I posted about it in the safety valve and not one reply to date. As time goes by I'm learning that its' better to move on to another post if you cannot assist someone or at least get the proper info so a more experienced member will drop in the thread to help them. One time is enough for me so now if I can't get them halfway I at least ask the basics as I know the seniors, addicts and mods are busy with the site as a whole.

    @ILHS86

Right my final word on the matter, since when did I EVER highlight yourself for making any comments????????????????????? or anybody for that matter.
    BTW:I can read.............

Secondly, if you read his last post, I do believe anything I may have added would of been in vain due to the initial comments that were made and his/her final comment.

Thirdly, it ain't a competition to see who can answer a thread first, and give some guidance.

    My comments were justified....................

    Now all that said:

[bold]Leave the moderating to the moderators[/bold]

Geeze, no wonder we have lost so many knowledgeable members, with people trying to show 'their strength behind a keyboard', and it is this that pisses me off........................
