I always use Verbatim 16x +r's and my burner is the LG 4163b. Anway, a couple weeks ago my burner stopped working right. All dvd's play fine but the burning speeds sometimes don't reach 16x. It'll get to the last third of the burning process when it's supposed to surpass 12x on it's way to 16x, but it never goes up to 16x. Sometimes it'll even drop down to 8x and sometimes it'll go up to 16x like it should. I've been burning dvd's a few months with no problems until this. I have different burners and they all seem to this do with my pc. I've switched ram, mobo, and processor and still the same thing. Any ideas? Could it be a crappy power supply? All my firmware is up to date and the psu is the Antec Phantom 500 which has the highest efficiency. If I can't figure it out then I'll just stop caring about it since the dvd's play fine so far. It just bugs me when things don't work like they should and makes me think my pc is about to bomb out on me.
it sounds like unfeasibly high burn speeds. have a look thru these 2 links for valid reasons not to (try to) burn movies at impossibly high speeds. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/266706 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/279651 i have an LG 4163B and i use it most of the time at 4x, but it also does 8x fine most of the time. after doing a couple thousand burns at 4x i can guarantee 4x as a stable and sensible speed, lots of other ppl have zero problems with 8x but 16x, that's just silly
maxxjulie New firmware for your drive: A106 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/284708 In case you don't have it yet.
aint the burner cuz the same thing happens w/ my benq drive. i'll try a different power supply. last resort.
uhhhhhhhh you didn't seem to consider what Creaky told you about burning speeds....you probably finally got a batch of DVD's that don't like the higher burning speeds. Simple as that..........
I seem to remember a thread a few weeks back started by the poster regarding speed. I think that maxxjulie just likes to burn at the max rate. I hope that it works for her. I think the feeling of the poster is that if it's rated at 16x it damn well better burn at 16x.
this is the second straight batch of verbatim for me. one was printable verb's 16x +r from sam's club and now i'm on silver verb's 16x +r from best buy.
@maxxjulie, you really need to read those links. movies just won't burn at 16x consistently. never mind play consistently
i burned at 16x for a couple months without a problem. something has to be wrong. it doesn't make sense cuz i have three burners(2 lg 4163 and 1 benq 1655) and it's the same inconsistancy with each. i put each drive on it's own ide cable and still no improvement. i don't want to debate whether 16x is too fast or not. i'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with my system. i'll swap out my power supply and post the results.
before i sold my nec drive and could quality scan with nero cd-dvd speed my lg always had quality scores between 97-99. so something is suddenly not working right.
9mmruger1's last reply was right... it's your prerogative to not believe us but i strongly suggest you read those links, you'll even find claims of powerful power supplies in there
Well, switching the Power Supply didn't change anything. I give up. I've wasted enough time on this. The dvd's play fine and I guess I'll just start burning @8x. My lg burns Taiyo Yuden 8x +r's even better than Verbatim's so I guess that's the brightside. This still urks me and makes no sense. I've changed everything in my pc including a fresh install of windows with the newest bios and firmwares on everything. Just makes no sense.
well, follow our 'sensible' advice and not outlandish claims of 16x burn speeds and it will all make sense :O
but I swear it worked fine with no coasters and low pie/pif counts for months @16x. maybe my pc case has been cursed or something.
i dunno what else i can say, a 700W power supply wouldn't even help here. all i can suggest is stick to 8x and have the case exorcised
final message on this one. i changed the setting on the program i use and increased the buffer size from the default 20mb to 150mb. i burned ten dvd's and only 2 maxed out at 12x. the other 8 burned normally at 16x. all ten appeared to play perfectly although I only skipped through them. so i'm not completely satisfied but a little happier then before. the end.
