Is there a discussion anywhere about rated burning speeds?
    I have a 16X burner. Should I buy 16X media and burn as fast as I can.......buy 16X and burn at 8X........buy 8X and burn at 8X?

Most people burn 16X media at either 8X or 12X, a few will burn at 16X. The time difference between burning at 16 and 12X is not great, but the quality of playback on videos is noticable. (less pixelation and jumps) With a 16X or higher burner you won't have a problem burning at 8X.
The choice between 8X and 16X media depends upon sales for most of us.
My recommendation for media is to stick with the good stuff, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony type media. Avoid the made in India and made in China for the time being, some members have reported problems with these type of disks.
    I hope that this helps.

Personally, i burn between 6x and 8x. The difference in time to burn at a lower speed is nearly inconsequential and the quality is better.

General rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disc, if your concerned about quality.

Like Blivet said, blank media is a huge issue too.

I normally stick with 8x speed. I only go to 12x if I'm burning a data disk. I have burned at 16x in the past and all I ended up burning was coasters.

I'm also trying to find out whether it is worth the extra cost to buy 16X media. Is it safe to assume that if i want to burn at 8X i might as well buy 8X media but if i want to burn at 12X go for 16X media.....and the difference in burning time between 16X and 12X is 25%?

In my own experience, most media sold are rated at 16X so the savings (if any) should be quite minimal.

My brothers are correct in their statements. I would just like to add one thing.
Everyone's pc is set up differently. You'll have to test which burning speed is good for you. You may burn one brand at a different speed than another. You will have to run tests as all of us here have done.
You can check your burns with Nero CD-DVD Speed.

thats it in a nut shell. cant put it any plainer than that.
the most improtant thing it to get good media.Verb/TY. and experiment with them and see what your setup likes. my rig will burn the 16x verbs at 8x & 12x all day and have perfect playback. but if i try and burn with imagburn at 10x speed i get crappy results.
then onece you get nero cd-dvd speed run your scans check them out and post your results here.

Thank you for the concise numbers, this helps. Yes, I know that there are other variables. This is very helpful
    Anybody with numbers for:

    16X Burner
    8X media
    Burn @ 8X

    Thanks again

I use both 8x and 16x discs, all my burners are 16x. I only ever burn at 8x, no need for anything 'faster' for me. A lot of my burns are multiple recorder burns, ie burning the same movie to multiple concurrent discs, i have a mixture of internal and external (USB2.0) burners, a couple are SATA the rest are IDE, and i always use a mixture of 8x and 16x discs for multiple burns.

As to which to buy, 8x or 16x, it's a very long time since i last bought any 8x discs (most of my 8x blanks are 3yrs old now) so i don't know if 8x discs are becoming more scarce now ie if they're being replaced more and more by 16x discs

I have a 20x burner, and have burned at 8x, 12x, & 16x. I have also copied a image at 20x. They all came out fine, but I will only burn higher than 8x on occasion.

I think a lot of it is due to replacement by 16x discs. I've still got some 8x discs hanging around here somewhere.

I still see a few 8x disks, usually at radio shack or big lots.

I started this thread and have gotten alot of really useful information. I have learned some stuff here. But, my original question kind of got lost. I'll take the blame on that since I should have just asked the question directly. In any case Rayboy gave me most of what i need and answered my question as follows:

    Burner 16X
    Media 16X
    Burn at 8X, 99.99% yield.

All i need now to complete my quest is for someone to plug in some results for

    Burner 16X
    Media 8X
    Burn at 8X

    That is my question directly.
    Thank you

Not sure exactly what you're trying to achieve with the question. Not everyone burns the same way. But if your 'yield' equates to coasters, i don't do coasters :)
..i personally stick to 8x because it works for me 100% of the time. Some people do 12x, some even do 16x, and of course many do 4x. I myself used to swear by 4x for the longest time, but now i stick to 8x. I personally don't see any point in going faster, i've burnt many 1000s at 4x and at 8x, whilst i may well be able to do 12x i don't see the point - a standard movie at 8x takes only 5mins, and on my Quad core machine i can be doing many other things at the same time as that 5min burn.

It's like cd's, these days you can burn them at silly speeds, but for audio cd's i still stick to 16x and for data i use 24x.
