ok, so i'm having issues getting my drive to burn at full speed.

i cannot get it to burn either 8x memorex or maxell dvd's at anything faster than 2.4x using both sonic and dvd decryptor.

    any suggestions?

edit: i've got the latest firmware from the firmware page as well.

    it's a dell OEM drive.

I take it you do not know the make and model of the burner, Dell probably does not manufacture the drive, but I'm not sure.

What software are you using? If you have Nero, it will tell you all about your drives specs, including the name of it.

i take it you missed the thread title... ;)

the drive is made by sony, says so on both the drivers list in hardware as well as with dvd decryptor.
i've updated the firmware, but cannot get it to burn any faster than 2.4x (it's an 8x drive).

You take it right, I sure did. Is this the latest firmware you are on "UYS2"? But there is another (LtnRPC) that allows you to reset or disable the Region Counter. This info was obtained from
    here, http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

I am sure you are aware that many of the Memorex media are not the best in world to use, causing an abundant of problems, and this could be one of those problems. Many advise on this forum to only burn at half that rated speed, so that would be 4x, just a suggestion.

To identify the codes on the media download and install http://www.DVDInfoPro.com or try DVD Identifier V4.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com

Other than that best of luck,

    Rich

P.S. Don't use this media==> Memorex/CMC/Imation/TDK. For best results only use Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim DataLifePlus, Taiyo Yuden & Ritek G05.

Even CMC will burn faster than 2.4X. Check to see if DMA is on or off for the drives. You can use Nero's infotool to find out or check in Device Manager and check the Secondary IDE Channel. Check the Primary while you're there, but the optical drives should be on the secondary. The primary is usually reserved for hard drives.

Dell is usually pretty good about listing firmware for drives that need it. The sony support site lists firmware for their drives that need it as well. So it doesn't hurt to occasionally check both sites.

pity, i bought 150 on the reccomendation from a close friend and a great sale at bestbuy.

thanks for the help so far guys.

(i have the latest UYS2 or whatever the firmware is off the codec page) :)

Well, if DMA is currently on than leave it on, however, those Memorex can be really be a problem. Perhaps you can take them back, and get a refund, hopefully?

Don't use this media==> Memorex/CMC/Imation/TDK. For best results only use Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim DataLifePlus, Taiyo Yuden & Ritek G05.

i'll see if i can get a refund...pain in the ass, but i'll use the verbatim stuff in the future.
    i suppose it's not a huge deal, i don't burn more than a few dvd's, so 2.4x vs 8x isn't massive...just annoying...

    thanks!

I still suspect something other than the media, but I could be wrong. Buying a small pack of Sony +R at the local store will answer that question. The MIJ Sony +R is Taiyo Yuden and the MIT is top grade as well, it carries a Sony manufacturer code. Be careful what you buy, CMC manufactures for brands other than Memorex.

Out of curiosity, were these the 8X or 16X media and what speed did you set the program to burn at?

DVD Identifier and DVDInfoPro are both freeware and can ID the manufacturer code. DVDInfoPro has some good utilities as well. Would you mind using one of these to get the manufacturer info and post it here.

He said DMA was on, so that doesn't appear to be a problem. He'd only need to go over the material if it's off. Besides, the simple solution if in DMA Off is to merely uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel in Device Manager, reboot, and let the system pick it back up as plug and play. Then recheck to make sure the change to DMA On occurred.

    Thanx
To me it seemed like he was a little confused about the DMA, he had two ?? marks.
    Didn't know about you suggested.
So the info in the link I gave him is not valid? Is what you suggested more reliable(I've seen some reporting in their logs DMA off, although they say they went and did the change)

Normally the Primary IDE has the hard drives and the secondary has the optical drives. With Windows "Plug and Play" setup, when you uninstall the Secondary IDE, Windows picks it back up on the reboot and the DMA is automatically set to DMA On. You can do the Primary as well if necessary. If DMA stays off, then you have a system problem that needs to be addressed. Also, after resetting DMA On a person should check on it occasionally to see if there is a "hard" problem that causes the system to go back into DMA Off. Other than an explanation of DMA, there's no need for long texts or extensive "how to" diagrams. It's actually more trouble getting to the Device Manager than the actual resetting of DMA.

By the way, uninstalling and getting the system to reset the DMA is more reliable than the method suggested in the BurstCopy example. Changing it in the box doesn't always work. I guess it would be worth a try first. But as you noted, some people change it in the box and it doesn't actually go into effect and you still end up with DMA Off in the logs. Anytime a person resets the DMA, they should reboot, open the Device Manager and recheck the settings.

    Thanx Brobear.
:~)!Many ways that one can skin a cat!
What can cause a system to go back into DMA off?

    brobear,
I take it you really mean [bold]uninstall [/bold]? I don't know that one can delete it, or at least easily.

    the memorex dvd's are: RITEK-R03-02

    the maxell dvd's are: RITEK-R03-02

    via dvd decryptor

i'm using that to burn; but have tried the sonic software that came with the computer and same result, slow.

they show up on the dvd decryptor screen as 'supported write speeds - 2.4x' and nothing else

i've got the speed set at max, but have also tried 8x with no results.

i'm going to try calling dell to see what they suggest.

    thanks

Yeah, it sure sounds like the problem is with the drive. Hope you get some good results from Dell.

    Best of luck,
