i live in the UK, would i be better off buying a computer from the USA as my housemate lives there and has told me they are very cheap. Also when is the best time of year to buy a computer if there is any?

There is NEVER a best time of the year to build a system. Trust me, whatever you buy in two months will be old tech as soon as you take it home. Components are changing all the time. The best advice given to me is research what you need and jump into the game. If you got the money go for it.

I can't speak to the pricing comparisons but even if your friends in the US bought the components, won't there be shipping charges? How does that figure in to the overall price from the US to the UK?
