bypassing original xbox rom

    I picked up an xbox that has a broken dvd rom and I am trying to figure out a way to just bypass using it. I am thinking of replacing the original hdd with a bigger one and putting a whole bunch of games on it. Will this work? I think I may need a little help.

    how is it broken? does the xbox recognize it?

    the xbox recognizes the rom but won't spin the disc. keeps ejecting it without even trying anything.
