I was given a Motorola SB5101 from the USA and of course it wont work in the UK as it is. I've been told that i can get something called Blackcat to change the configuration so that it is compatible for UK. Is this correct? If so can anyone give me an idea how easy this is to achieve?

    Thanks in advance

Black Cat is a cable modem hacking tool. It would be illegal to use a hacked modem in the UK. All the UK cable companies supply modems as part of the contract. The cable service is locked to the modem. Please do not violate the rules of this forum by asking about hacking.

OK, so maybe you weren't trying to steal cable service, although you mention Black Cat, a well known cable modem hacking tool. In the US, many cable companies expect you to buy your own cable modem. In the UK, the cable company supplies the modem, which you have to use. I am really surprised you don't know this if you are UK based. Which makes me wonder if you were really "only interested" etc.

Indochine - nice try detective but you are far from right. I'm not "based" in the UK neither.

OK. If you're not based in the UK, why are you asking about adapting a US modem to work in the UK?

You need to be aware that

    1. Since the merger of NTL and Telewest (branded as "Virginmedia") there is now only one cable company in the UK.

    2. The only modems that will work on the Virginmedia network are those which Virginmedia supply. Each modem has a unique ID and only those recognised by the Virginmedia systems will work. They use DOCSIS 1.1 with digitally signed firmware which means that hacking the firmware effectively bricks the modem.

    3. Hacking a non-Virgin cable modem and connecting it to a Virgin cable outlet would be pointless, since it would not work.

    4. Hacking any cable modem and connecting it to a cable network with the intention of stealing service, eavesdropping on other users, or any other activity forbidden under a Virginmedia supply agreement would result in the agreement becoming void and may also be a criminal offence.

I work in many countries for periods of time is what i am willing to say but why i am asking these questions is none of your business. It sounds all very suspect doesnt it but really it was just a question. I have no desires to do anything to any cable network in the world. I'm no hacker and dont need to know what you know about hacking (i think you should be arrested with knowledge like that...not me).

All you had to say was that the question i asked cannot be answered on here. lot easier than presuming someone is a terrorist just because of a few words! :)

ddp - i apologise for disturbing your forum with a question like this. i mean no harm.
