When you say the cable modem works fine, am i right in assuming you can plug ethernet cable in another computer and get good internet connection?

Regards the laptop, am i right in assuming you unplug ethernet cable from other computer, plug in laptop, and thats when you get the problem?

When you say it connects and disconnects, how long is this for, do you get on the net at all?

If yo right click my computer, select manage, then device manager, do you have any yellow warning signs showing on anything.

Has this ever worked on the laptop?

What operating system are you using?

thanx 4 showing concern mr jodav, i will try to re-word this as it was late friday night and i was a little worse for wear. So i have a pc with windows me with a vigin media cable modem which works fine, i set up a wireless router so the laptop can connect thru the built in wireless connector on the laptop. the laptop has windows vista and when im lucky enougth to connect to the net it dosent last long at all, sometimes it cannot find my pc and sometimes it finds it but wont connect.i have to go out now so when i come back i will check device managment and connect the laptop to the cable modem just to make sure it works ok and its just the wireless giving me problems. Also its not the distance because it dosent connect when were just a metre away. hope this is a little bit clearer for you..

    Ok that is fine,
So you have a Virgin media cable modem, you have that connected to the line in connection the wireless router, you have an ethernet cable from one of the ports connected to the other PCs network card, that PC connects to NET no bother.

Firstly if you have not tried this already, switch computers off, unplug cable modem and Wireless router, plug in cable modem, 20secs later plug in wireless router, 20secs later turn comps on and try.

Surmising the problem is still there, some things you can do to enable myself or anybody who is on line at the time, and include in your post are,

1-Turn the windows firewall off for now (or any other firewall you may be using (try your connection when done).
    2-Check device manager as mentioned.
3-Check a wired connection is OK straight from the wireless Routerwith your cable modem connected to it as normal (may have to reboot comp)
4-Check a wired connection is straight from Cable modem (only do this step if you do not get a connection in previous step)
5-Check DHCP is turned on in your wireless Router settings (what wireless router is it?)
6-Right click my network places, select properties, you should see a connection named wireless network connection. Right click the Wireless network connection, select properties, and double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP, tell us what radio buttons are selected.

Hopefuly when you state you know the basics you will be able to do these things, any probs myself or someone else can help.

That will do for starters rossb82

Edit: Oh one more thing i should have asked first of all, have any other comps succesfuly connected to your wirelesss router at all.
