WOW, the wii doesn't play DVDs and no music cd's u must be kidding. how is nintendo expecting to make a mark in game industry with a console that doesn't play DVDs or music. nintendo is just gonna lose the gaming race to sony and microsoft.

to think i wanted a wii.

Is that web sarcasm? Because for me, there's a little truth in your statement. It's almost retarded to not have it double as a DVD player.

That's why's it so cheap. I read some where online that they will make a Wii in late 2007 that will play dvds and music, once I find the link I will post it up, but I know it will be much more than the original Wii to compete with 360 and ps3 prices next fall.

I thought I might just add my point of view on the current crop of consoles. First a little background, I usually buy one system at launch and forsake all others. Why? Well, most games a multi-platform, so to me the only reason to buy two consoles is a few exclusive games and the cost of getting a second console is not worth a couple of great games when there are usually similar alternatives on the system I already own. In my years I’ve bought a Genesis, PS1, and PS2. I have yet to regret any of those purchases (my launch PS2 is still going strong). I prefer story driven games with action or tension-oriented gameplay. For my money, the two crowning achievements of the last generation of consoles were Metal Gear Solid 3 and Resident Evil 4. What follows is my opinion of the current game consoles.

    Wii

The problems with the Wii are threefold. First, while I have never put much stock in the name of a console, wii is just the most horrible thing I have heard in my entire life. Every single time I hear it or see it in print I want to gouge out my eyes and ears. This is not exactly the reaction a company should strive for when choosing the name of their console, and it makes me wonder about the ability of Nintendo to make good decisions with the direction of their one big advantage (more exclusive franchises than Sony or Microsoft). Second, the vast majority of games simply don’t appeal to me. Other than the Resident Evil series (which is no longer Nintendo exclusive) there are just no games that would inspire me to run out and buy a wii. I realize that there are many people that can not live without their Mario, Zelda, and Metroid fix, but I’m not one of them. Finally, it is overpriced. It may seem strange that the cheapest of the next-gen consoles is overpriced, but it is. For what is actually in the box, $250 is just too much. While an Xbox 360 or PS3 may be quite a bit more expensive, the advantage of more disc space and infinitely greater horsepower justify spending more because these two factors will translate to better games. A few years from now, all third-party games will have to be gutted in order for them to work on the wii hardware.

    Xbox 360

The xbox is close to what I’m looking for from a next-gen console, but there are a few a few problems that would prevent me from buying one. The business practices of Microsoft are really what is holding the console back. The two package thing is a scam (which is not true to the two different versions of the PS3, but I’ll get to that below). First, the premium bundle costs Microsoft $40 more, but they charge $100 more, that means it is a scam. Second, the core bundle is missing a vital component (a way to save games). It’s time to face facts, an xbox without a hard drive is a giant paperweight. Considering that you must buy the $400 version (or buy overpriced memory cards with very limited storage), there is really only a $100 dollar difference in the price of the xbox and PS3. Another example of poor business practices by Microsoft is the wireless adapter. Providing drivers for other usb wireless adapters is simple (and lets not forget that Microsoft creates operating systems which have these drivers), but it an effort to sell their own severely overpriced wireless adapter they won’t provide these drivers. I also have sort of a phobia about paying for online gameplay, while everyone claims xbox live is vastly superior to the alternatives (and I’m sure it is), $60 a year is the equivalent of buying one less game a year. Finally, a real problem for the xbox is the fact that the Japanese people simply won’t buy a console from an American company. While I don’t really care about the buying habits of people 3,000 miles away, one has to wonder how heavily Japanese game companies will support a console that doesn’t sell in their home country. To me this is quite important as the majority of games in my collection are made by Japanese companies. All in all, the xbox 360 is tempting as it offers similar game selection and graphical power to the PS3 for a cheaper price, but these concerns will keep me from buying one.

    PS3

It’s expensive, damn expensive. Say what you want about all that is in the box, it is still damn expensive. I don’t really like being forced to buy a blue-ray player with my game console (I don’t have an HDTV and may not get one during the life of these consoles), although if the extra storage capacity translates to better and longer games this is something I can forgive. Having two different bundles is a mistake, but the cheaper bundle is a fully functional game system. It’s also important to note that many of the games that were widely considered to be PS3 exclusives will make their way to the xbox.

    My conclusion

I’ll grab the cheaper version of the PS3 (I have an extra usb wireless adapter laying around somewhere), but I may wait for a price drop.

So I was one of those cursed few to be given a 20GB PS3. I need a 60GB. The chrome is a necessity. I'm kidding...but it does look cool. How much do you think I'll be able to sell a used (but mint condition) 20GB PS3 on ebay?

    maybe 900? its late now.

so more and more im liking the ps3 moreover than the other consoles. it has alot going for it its just it needs time for development. the games comikng out seem great like lair, the games get me into it, and i'll be getting use out of my hdmi soon.

rr7 gets very hard in the end. takes an hour to win a race. my fame ranking is somewhere in the upper 800's of over 30000 people.

    I'm selling my last PS3.
    [this isn't ebay]
    It's a sad day...:(
Hopefully I'll be able to get a 60GB soon though. Does Target/Walmart have a waiting list? Or is it first come-first served?

Sorry. I think you misunderstood me though. I wasn't trying to sell it to anyone here, just updating them on my PS3 situation. I guess I just won't include the link anymore.

Inmate347....i agree with you. I myself think the wii is overpriced.

As for the PS3 even tho expensive I think its resonable. Just weird to me how ppl think they are "forced" to buy a Bluray player with the PS3. Arent you forgetting that PS3 games are Bluray? Movies are just a plus, icing on the cake. Blu ray as a movie format to me is retarded. So what 1080p, not everyone has that kind of TV anyways plus Im sure a 2hr movies dont take up more than 10 gigs so its pointless. Ppl who bought the actual stand alone Bluray player are either rich or retarded.

Now im not saying Bluray is bad...its great, for games. Ppl who say that the PS3 is overpriced are just haters. Cuz to get that kind of hardware on a PC would cost well over a grand. And some ppl will say so what the 360 doesnt cost that much. Well it does if you buy the HD DVD add on thats $200. Then ppl are gonna say well i dont need HD DVD. Well then i say good luck in the future when games are massively huge and wont fit on DVDs....waiting forever for load times and having short games that doesnt take very long to complete. As for the "over priced" PS3...Blu ray takes care of all those problems.

In my opinion the Wii shouldn't be bashed just because it doesn't play DVD's and CD's. Do you people not own a DVD player or a CD player? Sure they could have charged up to $400 and included DVD and other options but everyone already has a DVD player so why not buy the system for what it's meant to do..play games!
