DVD burners tend to vary considerably in their abilities to burn/backup. There are many variables that impact on burning including OS, memory, copy/write speed, brand of media, copy program used, system resources etc. to name a few. Some brands appear to be more reliable than others with some generic or rebadged brands fairly unreliable. It is like asking - are all brands of cars identical. The most common problem with DVD burning other than a combination of the variables listed above is normally a malfunctioning interface between the keyboard and the computer.
