I would like to up grade from my dell 2400. I would like to watch blue ray movies on it and occasionally play a video game like crisis. I want everything to run a lot faster than what i have now. what would you recommend?
well i'd say it would be possible but wanting blueray might put ya over the $600 budget you want to stick with. here we go MOBO $99 after MIR CPU $170 if you have a microcenter near you, you can get the Q9550 for $169 MEM $55 GPU $120 PSU $79 after MIR HDD $70 now this here will put you over $600 mark BlueRay Player not burner $715 will play blueray and hasa nice GPU to play the bigger games. i know sam, shaf, and boozer will pick something better, as they are the gamers and know more about them. this also doesnt include a case. so in short $800 is about what you would need. and im sure you can find the same stuff else where cheap if ya look...
My budget can be a $1000 now. I plan on ordering from new egg. what would you upgrade now that I have a bigger budget?
this mobo only a little more but has 2 pcie 2.0x16 slots http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358 this PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139002 this GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102815 and this case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119196 i chose the mobo i did assuming your not gonna overclock at least not to extreme. with just the upgrades its only 100 more adding the case its another 100 putting it at 915 with rebates. and i think most all the stuff i picked out has free shipping so that will save ya there. if yo dont have a OS you might want to get a 64bit one. to see all of your mem. 4gb ram plust the 1gb on the GPU thats 5gb a 32bit system wont see it all. once again this is just what i would try and do if i had to do it again. also the CPU i chose is a quad but a small one it is a good one but like i said at microcenter you can get the Q9550 for $169 sam price as the Q8400 i chose here.
What do you think of getting the i7 920 CPU? As far as the case that's a nice one I don't really care what it looks like, but I would like it to be quiet for watching blue ray. Also is all this compatible with hd?
you can do it for 600 easily, I know I built my phenom quad for less than that. phenon9750 quad w/mb = 170.00 cpu fan = 20.00 2gb ram = 30.00 400 watt "works" = 45.00 750gb hdd = 75.00 radeon 4670 pcie video card = 85.00 case = 30.00 dvdrom = 30.00 I don't have a bluray but at my local computer store the cheapest one is also 120.00. And this is for a phenom, I can find cpu/mb combos for under 100.00. You don't need alot of power to play games, any current x2 "bargain basement" cpu can play games. If you will do video encoding than you might need a quad, otherwise it will be a waste of money and power. I'm a big fan of the "works" power supplies, I use them on all my computers, I like the huge 120mm fans they use. A good power supply is very important even on a bargain basement computer. I have the radeom 4670 video card, it's a 85 watt card. It doesnt require an extra power plug to run. It plays every game I throw at it. I don't have crysis but you can check youtube and other users have videos of crysis running on this card. Right now the bottleneck on all computers is the hard drive. If you want everything to "run faster" you need a raptor 10000 rpm drive. If you want your computer to be almost instantaneous, you need the intels x25-m SSD but those are luxury items. Go to youtube and type in intel x25-m SSD, you will be surprised when they compare it to the raptor. My amd x2 4800 will play games just as well as my phenom quad, theres no noticable difference between the 2.
your jumping into another price range going with the I7 stuff. all together different format 1366 vs 775 you need all new mobo and mem. in just those 3 things your looking at 600-800 price range depending on what ya get. im not a amd fan all that much so cant truely comment on the amd stuff(cpu, mobo)
lets just say if I went with the I7 cpu what would you recommend just so I can compare. Would it be impossible to keep it under $1000?
Rob's build is quite powerful, but you can scale back on some products to make the PC better value. The high-end overclocking motherboard is a bit of a waste unless you are an overclocking enthusiast (as even cheaper boards can still overclock), and the 1GB GPU is also unnecessary, as is the high output PSU, and black edition hard disk. It's certainly no bad PC, but it's more money than you need spend. Either way, it's literally twice as fast in pretty much every department as the PC jony spec'ed, which is more a budget build (advising an original quad these days is laughable, the 9700 is barely worth $50, let alone $170). For $1000, an i7 is doable. i7 920 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 EX58-UD3R Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128375 6GB Corsair XMS3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145222 XFX Radeon HD4870 1GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150394 - two free games with this if you order before the end of august. Okay great! Im going to order on modnday do I need anything else? I should get vista 64 bit and some thermal paste. Is there anything else? Thanks for the help!
There's no real need for thermal paste unless you get an upratee cooler, as the standard one already comes with it pre-applied.
Depending on where you are and what your needs may be..... I've found one heck of a good deal on a particular site from some folks in my area. If you are in the US, it may be worth checking out. www.axiontech.com Check out the "winter specials" they are still in effect. Mostly mid range parts, but with a couple of addons on the higher end units, I've been able to build a couple of great machines with them. AMD 7500+ Black editions. Hella OCers. Unlocked multipliers. Very nice.
7750 and 7850 Black edition CPUs actually don't really overclock at all. They're cheap, slow and old. If you're going to use an AMD dual core, make it an Athlon II 250 or Phenom II 550, as they are the modern chips that will overclock.
I ordered everything except the dvd burner. It is out of stock is there an alternative one or maybe a nice one I could pick up at best buy. Or even use the one from my dell?
I now have everything ordered and was wondering what the best online guide that can help me put this thing together?
Well for the most part everything only fits in one slot, but i suggest reading over the mobo book before jumping into it.
I had to order the dvd drive separately and its not going to get here til Monday. could I use the one out of my dell or if I go to best buy can i just buy the cheapest one they have? I don't want to wait all weekend.
yes you can use one out of your dell. it is prolly IDE anyways. use it until the new drive gets there and swap them out. it will be fine to install your OS,drivers, ect.
