Can I edit after copying with Shrink?

Suppose I used Shrink to copy a movie to my HD, including a few extras. After watching various VTS (using PowerDVD) I decide that I'm not interested in those extras and I want to get rid of them before burning to blank DVD.

Instead of copying the movie again with Shrink and not choosing those particular extras, can I simply delete from my HD, before burning, all the VTS above 01 (VTS_02, etc) including *.bup and *.info, that belong to these VTS, or will I cause a big mess?

Also, if you do it again using Shrink and don't add those extras, you will get less compression or maybe no compression on the main title, which will give to better quality.

 

I would agree with Veblin, a mess. Unless you get all the informational files and audio files you end up with a screwed up set of files.

A program such as DVDReMake or some of the freeware may be more what you want for editing out files. Shrink is a great program with editing capabilities. Since you have the original video whay not watch it and make the decision and edit with Shrink. Otherwise, spring for an editing program.

 

good point veblin, even if you could, which is conceivable (maybe?), why would you want to? You're gonna be dealing with compressed files. Just to save 30 minutes? Your schedule must be really tight! Quality will be less, why not re-author 1st and then re-compress?

 

I have backed up stuff for my brother who doesn't have a burner and wanted his DVD back as quickly as possible. I copy the DVD to the harddrive using a custom setting of 9999 so it will finish quickly. I let the machine do this while I am at work in the morning and by lunch time I am able to return the DVD back to him. During lunch I look at the output of DVDSHRINK and modify the settings and compress the files. I then create a DVD and give the backup to my brother. If you copy the original to the harddrive exactly as it is on the DVD, dvdshrink will treat the harddrive version exactly like the DVD disk version. I should point out that you can manipulate what you want copied to the harddrive (removing subtitles, etc.) and DVDSHRINK will still let you work with the harddrive version.

This is not the same situation as ripping the entire disc to his HD, which of course you could use over and over again. If he were to use those files(if he could) he would be dealing with already compressed files, which would lower video quality as opposed to using unauthored files from a full disc copy.

 

As a rule of thumb - what would you suggest is the minimum compression rate that one should use with Shrink?

 

Hard to answer, I don't know what other apps you have or what your standards are. Personally I wouldn't go over 15% or 20% leaving your dvd at 80 to 85%. A lot go up to 50% and you will still have decent backups..


I have other apps i choose to use with more than 15% compression, Nero's recode, Pinnacle's InstantCopy 8, Intervideo's DVDCOpy 2, and the granddaddy of them all, for extremely long movies, DVDRebuilder/CCE.


For people new to the backup scene, I recommend Nero ultra 6, a complete video/audio package for 49.00 at eagletronics, normally costs 99.00.

It's a matter of choice. Re-authoring in shrink eliminates menu function, I prefer to keep that. I like some extras, not all. In the end, it's what makes you happy.

All the progs I mentioned will do this, sorry, can't be done in shrink.

When they get the new version of DVD Shrink out, 3.2, you should be able to use it easily for compression up to 25%. I went to about 33% with the 3.2b4 Beta and it worked well. Anything above 30% I would suggest a program like CCE like BigO said. They still didn't put in functional menus with editing, so I go with the software list proposed by BigO.

You can get the trial version Nero's ultra 6 which has recode. Recode works almost exactly like shrink while retaining menu function and has better quality. You have to reinstall the trial version every month, but it will give you an idea of how wonderful this package is. Again, well worth 49.00.

I would just like to add, Nero does not retain functioning menus when re-authoring.
What it does is give the option to convert titles to a static image when using its "full-disc" mode.
It's still a better option than DVD Shrink "Still-Pictures".

 

Maybe the upcoming Shrink version (3.2) will do the trick...

By the way, I take it that I can use the Still Pictures mode on specific extras while leaving the others intact (even if compressed). So essentially I'd be able to use the menu to watch the extras I left intact (and skip the Sill ones).

itsmekev, I would like to add that yes, recode does substitute a static image for the extra, but I prefer that over choosing that link and the menu having nowhere to go and then the DVD ejecting or if in a changer, switching to the next disc, as happens with many other programs.


So essentially, for all practical purposes, you are still retaining menu function after re-authoring and it gives your link somewhere to go, if only to tell you that particular video has been removed.
