[bold]Quote: recode does substitute a static image for the extra, but I prefer that over choosing that link and the menu having nowhere to go...[/bold]

What do you prefer over what? :)

You prefer Shrink (with Still Pictures) over Nero (pic inserted) or vice versa?

By the way, I assume Shrink is not powerful enough to allow cutting out credits or embedded studio logos and
    removing warning/rating screens.

If so - any suggestion for one that would do the trick?

lol, I prefer nero 10 to 1 over shrink, right now. The new shrink remains to be seen, altho I hear they've hit a big snag.

[bold]after re-authoring and it gives your link somewhere to go, if only to tell you that particular video has been removed. [/bold] Does that not tell you I'm talking about Nero?

Hey, I'm not too bright, only tall, so you have to say/write it slow...

Besides, I'm a newbie, and I'm allowed silly questions.

    Nero 10 did you say?

    Easy, Bigo - easy.

We never discussed cutting out credits or embedded studio logos and removing warning/rating screens. Only now I learn from you (thank you, Master) that Nero is the answer to all my questions (including ending world hunger, fixing the ozone hole, etc).

I missed the credits part, never tried that. I'm pretty tall myself, unfortunately I have the weight to go with it.

no need to call me master, sir big O will do.

Bigo - your (subtle) apology is accepted, although a box of chocolates (cash will do too) is recommended.

If you need my address - just PM me... ;-)

I was unaware that I apologized or that I have anything to apologize for. All I'm doing is trying to assist you in making a competent backup.

Speaking of, why don't you do this, it's a free trial, download it, use it, then ask questions. You have enough to go on now.

My dear Bigo - allow me to ask questions as much and as often as I like, and please don't send me to my room only because I ask another question. I appreciate your help, I really do, but please don't treat me like your student.

As to the "apology" - I was kidding. Essentially you wrote previously that you answered my questions before
[bold]"I have told you repeatedly recode will do "the trick"[/bold] only to come later (after I replied) with [bold]I missed the credits part, never tried that[/bold]...

Again, thanks for your help, and don't take life (and this forum) too seriously.

    BigO
You in another one of those what if situations? What if my dog ran away, my girlfriend left, the mailman went with her, and will Decrypter fry the eggs for breakfast?

brobear, you hit the nail on the head!

ya know, ya try to help someone, you reply to post after post and they still come back with question after question and they haven't even tried any of your suggestions which, by the way may have answered some of their later queries.

Now, I'm being reprimanded when, if I hadn't said anything, wouldn't even be in this situation.

itsmekkev, no.1- anyone that knows me I don't take much of anything too seriously, except maybe, Tennessee football.

no.2 if I or anyone else for that matter, got responses like the last one I received from you by other people looking for help, no one ever would get any assistence.

No.3-no one told you to go to your room, until you try some advice you were given, you'll never know what the hell you're doing and be able to ask relevant and intelligent questions. J. Christ, learn to re-author, then worry about "credits". What a mistake that was , I actually didn't specify on how to edit credits, what was I thinking, of course you had no where to turn!

no. 4- I never took you on as my protege' or student, I only tried to assist, obviously that was a mistake.

no.5- You have made 12 posts in this thread alone and as far as I know you haven't done one thing with recode or any other app but shrink.

You can ask all the questions as "much and as often" as you like, but this member has had his fill of you and your antics! Don't thank me on one end and reprimand me on the other. In fact, just don't thank me at all!

    Bigo,

For your info - I not only ask questions but do my homework as well. I already copied, reauthored, edited and burned (successfully) a few movies. Once in a while I'd come back with another question, and I don't see any harm with it. Especially that this area is new to me and I'm excited about expanding my horizons.

It's a forum, my friend, and no one is bugging you personally for answers. You had enough - take a rest, or just ignore the questions. After all no one is knocking on your door or bombarding your email.

Your help is not requested anymore and your attitude surely not appreciated. As to thanks that you don't want - your wish is happily respected.

You're totally wrong there, I get plenty of emails and PM's asking for help, only difference is they appreciate someone's time, you don't. You're obviously never wrong.

As far as your homework goes, I still maintain you've done absolutely nil in recode.

As far as taking a break, I will, from you!

I just sent a message to Bigo, in which I expressed my regrets for the somewhat unpleasant exchange, and apologized for my part.

I hope that with this the small "incident" came to conclusion, and we'll go back to our sacred mission of burning...

    Bigo,

Thanks again for your PM in which you referred me to your short guide to Nero Recode.

Although it was intuitive to use, I didn't know that with Nero and DVD43Free (installed on my machine) I could import the movie directly to my HD, so first I used Decrypter to copy the movie to my HD, etc. Now I know better.

I left intact the menu (backed up the whole movie and inserted pics in place of a few extras). However, when I played the movie on my pc (PowerDVD) I could see the menu but it wasn't clickable. I wonder if I did something wrong or when I burn it it'll be operational on DVD player.

How do you feel about backing up large movies (larger than 6GB)? Do you also believe that Decrypter and Copy2One is the best combo, and not Shrink (or Recode)? For instance I'd like to back up Lonsome Dove and the movie itself is almost 8GB! What's the best way to achieve most favorable compression? Should I use Recode?

1st off, the standalone 2.0 version of dvd43 is not free, only version 1.4, which requires installation of patin couffin. If you decide to purchase, I recommend Anydvd, same principle, a little better app. You are not actually burning to your HD, only to a temporary folder which I delete as soon as I am done. This is a good method for limited space.

Some people don't like to burn "on the fly" and if so, decrypter works admirably for the rip, do so in file mode to use with recode. If I'm doing no re-authoring, I use anydvd, if I am, I use decrypter.

On larger movies I prefer InstantCopy 8 and DVDCopy 2. Both have extremely good pic quality. Copy 2 is fast, very fast, IC 8 is more consistant, as sometimes you can experience white pixelation problems in the video with Copy 2.. Not often, but sometimes. On the other hand, it's re-authoring is better than IC 8, so it's kind of a trade off. One factor is IC 8-25.00, DVDCopy 2-79.00.

For extremely long movies, the clear winner (no arguments on this one) is DVDRebuilder/CCE, it is picture perfect. The drawback, 3-4 hours to backup a movie. It is not a beginner app, but once set up it is truly one click in the simplified method. It has no editing, most of us use DVDremake to re-author before going into RB/CCE. CCE-58.00 DRM-25.00 pro-40.00

These are my favorites and not the opinion of everyone else. Only what I have seen in my experience with DVD backup.

Finally,if you feel you have erred in recode use a RW, thus no coasters, if the burn fails.

    Good luck....

Some excellent choices there BigO. Intervideo appears to have gotten the pixel problem repaired a bit from the earlier versions. When a pixel problem does show up, they are more noticable than some apps, but are not the white giants of old.

DVDCopy2 is more touchy about background 'noise' than most. It is best suited for the new movies and good condition discs. It suffers from poor input, such as old movies with dots and flashes and the discs that have been abused and scratched. For those I use Recode2, its not as good a picture, but the program is more forgiving. I don't have the IC8.

So my favorites are DVDCopy2 and the Recode2. Members of your top rated list. I'm just getting into the CCE, so you're one up on me there.
