    Hello,

I want to get rid of the removable device icon in the system tray. I only want to remove it in respect to my dvd drive (it's a dell laptop with a removable cd drive). I never remove the drive while the laptop is on so I don't need that icon showing there for my dvd drive and it's annoying me.

I want it to show (if possible) for everything else I might plug in with usb etc but NOT for my internal dvd drive.

Is there something like a firmware upgrade for the drive that will make it non removeable?

The drive has the following details on it:

    Dell LBL P/N: C3284-A00
    DS/N IE-0J899F-70619-899-0048
    DPN/ 0J899F
    REV A 00

    Thanks.

Right click the task bar and select Properties. At the bottom section of the screen you will see a section called Notification Area. Select Customize and a screen will appear with your current notification icons. select the icon and you will have the option to hide it always. This will allow the removable device to still function because it is still running on your machine.

This relies on enabling the "hide inactive icons" option, which I absolutely hate.

I want to stop the pc recognizing a device as removeable that is essentially not removeable.

    Anyone?

You said in your initial post "it's a dell laptop with a removable cd drive"

It is a removable device and you cannot make it otherwise just because you don't want it to be removable.

I checked on Microsoft's website this designation is tied to the device definition.

AFAIK, what you want would require modifying the device driver, or at the very least, the .inf file for that device.

Yes I'm sure it would, I'm trying to make windows think it's not removable. This is something I would like to do on a number of machines.

I was hoping someone would have done this before and know what needs modifying. This is a bit too deep for me to get into myself at this stage but it would be nice if there was a program that can alter the device drivers or firmwares of known removable slimline and laptop drives to get rid of annoying icon in system tray.

If anyone's still intrested in this thread, I found a program that will actually do this, it's free and available for download here:

    http://www.iconremover.com/download.htm

I'm using this for the time being but really what I would ultimately like to do is remove the removable device icon on an individual device basis, so I could leave it for usb flash drives for instance but turn it off for my laptop dvd drive. Someone tells me that this is actually possible by modifing the the device instance ID in device manager since it is something in that string which actually tells windows that it's removable, this is the kind of fix I was initially looking for. I will have a go at that soon and post back about that in case anyone is interested.
