    Well can I!

I wish to share some movies with a friend who's not internet connected - can I write the installation to a disc and run it from there?

You have to ask yourself if you really want to be spreading codec packs around though especially to friends. Better might be to include mplayer or VLC on the disc or to just include the decoders required. Chances are that would just be Xvid (avi container with mp3 audio). Media Player Classic is also worth considering.
