Can I swap my broadband company's wireless router for my own?

My wireless internet is pretty slow and I don't get a very good signal. The router is in the living room and when I sit in the kitchen I get a very poor signal and sometimes no signal at all. I'd understand except my house is open plan and there isn't wall between my laptop and the router!

My question is can I swap the router that my broadband company gave me for a better one that I bought myself without causing any problems with my internet service. I guess I mean will there be any extra work I'd have to do or could I just unplug the old one and stick in a new one without any complications?

It depends on how they setup your internet. If you have a modem between their router and their line (whatever line they feed the internet through), then you can remove their router completely and replace it with your own. If the wifi is built into their modem, you can still connect your own router to the wired output of the modem, and use it in that way...you will still have their crummy wifi, but you will also have your own wifi.

Thanks for the reply. I think it comes through a cable via their router. If I connect my router to their modem like you suggested will it improve my signal quality?
