In short, it's not always best to record at the slowest speed. In fact, it is usually a poor policy if the slowest speed is less than half the top rated speed of a disc medium.

I have received a message of Verbatim technical support:

this is also what I thought to be right and always have burned my Dual Layer disks with a minimum of risks.

on topic since this thread hasnt been for about 15 posts now.....

you can get a pcmia card that has the via 6421 chipset in it, and be alright. but you will have to power the drive via the console itself as you wont have any other power source available. (and if this manages to throw a flag as some trolls will state, it must not be a big one since i've done this on my console numerous times, and havent been banned). flashing with a laptop has been done before, its just a little more tricky since you dont have any pci slots or available sata connections to use.

There are several things wrong with the answer from Verbatim technical support (other than the odd punctuation and misuse of words, if the answer were properly cut and pasted):
The recording speeds of DVD+R DL discs are: 2.4X, 4X, and 8X. 2P DL production can work at all three speeds, assuming that the drive firmware allows recording at 2.4X for an 8X DL drive. Not all 8X DL drives do allow that slowest speed because it is an extra setting that has to be designed and written into the firmware memory.

8X inverse stack DL discs, however, may not work well at 2.4X; and they are very unlikely to work on older 4X and 2.4X DL drives. Verbatim may still be using the 2P process for 8X DL production, and their higher costs/prices probably reflect that decision. Ricoh and Ritek have definitely moved to IS for 8X production, and successfully recording those less expensive 8X DL discs requires a more modern drive with firmware that allows recording on IS discs.

If your drive supports 2.4X recording on Verbatim 8X DL discs, then the advice is correct. If your drive only supports 4X recording on those discs, it would not be wise to force a slower speed because the original firmware does not support the slower speed. As for 8X IS DL discs, only drives from the last two or three years can support them; and 4X is probably the better speed.

I know this has nothing to do with the thread title, however this was as good a place as any to addres dred05's various posts on the 'burning DL media at 2.4x' topic mentioned further up this thread

I know dred05 is banned now, but I was suspicious of his "response from Verbatim" as it contained the same sort of grammatical errors that dred05 made quite often, so I decided to email Verbatim myself. Here's the response: -
