Hi all, Ive posted previously in some other Philips topics, but wanted to pose a few questions here. Ive used a Philips DVDR 72/17 for a few years. It's made a number of successful shows and movies. However, lately it's had problems finalizing the discs. It records for hours, but when I press stop it says "disc error". The DVD+RW discs record fine and do not require finalizing. Ive tried many types of media (Memorex, Ritek, Sony), and its worked often until 70% into the spindle. Still somehow I believe it is the MEDIA that is problem - not the player. Now most all of the NEW media sold is 1-16X, and it appears the older philips 72 machines are not able to handle the HIGHER burn rate media. Is that correct? Ive seen several other threads here and elsewhere about the philips disc error problem. They have either concluded (1) bad media or (2) firmware upgrade needed (mine is current) or (3) failed device (an assumption or is it just out of date?). Havent seen much info about "INCOMPATIBLE" media. Seems the high burn speeds are killing the old DVD recorders. If this really is the case, if so were can I find CHEAP 1-4X media. I saw a 100 pack of Ritek for almost $100 - wow!! May be easier to just buy a NEW recorder that accepts the newer, faster media - however, I just can't seem to let go of this project, and have no idea what kind of picture quality the other brand recorders will offer. All the reviews on these devices are NEGATIVE - people ranting and raving about all the problems they have with them - guess no one takes the time to go online to talk about how great their recorder is. Where to go next, thoughts anyone?
I also have a Philips recorder that has stopped working. Unlike yours, I get a DISC ERROR when I try to play discs. At first it was picky, now it won't play anything! I bought a laser lens cleaner disc but of course it wont play it! I used to fix stereos back in the olden days before CDs came along so if someone can tell me the what the problem is I can take my unit apart and service it.
Hi, folks. Look for firmware updates for your products. These often tell the player/recorder how to properly handle newer media types. If you can't find updates, check out supermediastore.com. They sell 4x Taiyo-Yuden (the best!) DVD-R for something like $0.22 a disc shipped. That's cheaper than the questionable media they sell in retail stores. @70gtx- I suspect your recorder is hosed. The only thing I can recommend is cracking the thing open and manually cleaning the laser (with the power OFF, obviously!) with a q-tip. Your recorder MAY be of the type that uses a separate DVD burner mounted within the case, attached to the recorder's electronics. If so, the unit itself is probably a rebadged Lite-On. FYI, modern stuff is considerably more picky than the stereos we worked on back in the day, so you usually can't just substitute parts, but will have to use a Philips/Lite-On drive if that's the case. Let me know how this turns out.
