I have recently added an Optorite dvd-rw to my system.
    I have windows ME.
    Burning software is Nero

When ever I go through 'My Computer' and do a properties check on the dvd-rw drive it only shows a blank dvd-r as being 648MB, not showing 4.7GB.
When I try to do a DVD to DVD copy using Nero as soon as it starts it tells me there is not enough space on the disc in the writer.
I have used Shrink dvd to copy some discs larger than 4.7GB and when it writes the 'Shrunk' file it works fine using Nero.
Any body able to tell me what I need to change for my PC to read a blank 4.7GB as what they are. It seems to me that it is only seeing the drive as a CD rom.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I went from W98SE to XP Pro. Does ME use a FAT32 or NTFS file system? When I used my W98 machine to backup using Shrink I know it was lying to me about the filesize.

I think ME is a FAT 32, What is the answer if this is the case?
    Thanks.

Win ME uses a fat32 filesytem - this has probs reading files over 4Mb - you could try compressing files to less than 4Mb or upgrading your operating system

    Cowl,
I hear what you are saying.
When I assess the disc using Nero,Shrink,Decrypter they all tell me it is 4.7GB but even when i use Nero it wont say disc is big enough.
I dont understand why it reads it right one way but still wont allow me to record the other.
Does XP not use FAT 32?
    Will XP resolve these problems?
    Thanks.

WindowsXP can operate on both the FAT32 and NTFS file system. However the NTFS has the big advantage in that it is not restricted to the 4GB file size that the FAT32 system is. You can set WindowsXP up on a non-partitioned drive on the NTFS system.

If you already have WindowsXP on your system and are on the FAT32 system you can easily convert it by going to Help and Support on the XP start up menu and typing in NTFS convert and follow the instructions.

Are you saying that Nero is saying there is not enough space on the blank DVD disc when you try to write files or are you having problems writing a back up of a movie to the hard disc?

Windows 98 and ME use FAT32, and Windows 2000 and Windows XP include the option to use the NTFS file system. Windows 98 and ME are based upon the Windows95 Kernel and are both DOS based systems.

    Carpki,
Nero tells me when I use 'displays medium information'icon that the blank dvd-r is 4.7GB correctly. it only tells me there is not enough space when I try to start a recording project like 'on the fly'. It is not that I am trying to copy a disc which is Larger than 4.7GB i.e a full original dvd film.
Even when I try to copy dvd to dvd with Nero and the disc I am trying to copy is less than 4.7GB it tells me not enough space.
I know that the Nero works propery because I have used it with Shrink DVD to burn following the shrink to the HDD with perfect results.
All I can think is that I should upgrade to XP so I can select not to use the FAT32 system.
    Lets hope it works.
    Thanks.

DVD's don't really offer an avaible 4.7 gigs for recording. That's why most compression engines such as Shrink and DVD2one's are set to around 4.36 gigs. If the size of your files exceed 4.36 (I've had them come in at 4.37 and burn)then the smaller file size that you were referring to might still be too harge to burn. If not then hey "back to the drawing board." Other possibilities could include software and drivers conflict, error's in your windows registry, and faulty hardware. Sometimes the easiest solution is to first insure that the hardware is good then a reformat and reinstallation of Windows, especially if the registry is seriously corrupted, and then reinstall hardware and all essential applications. My best suggestion however is to update to XP Pro or Win2K because if your going to work with large files and video file are large you need a file system that is optimized to work with them and for now that's NTFS. Good Luck
