Please furnish brand and model of drive. When my HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR 8163 stopped reading CDs it could still read DVDs. Replacing drive solved the problem.

Could try to uninstall the drive from device manager, then reboot and let windows find it again as "new hardware".
Best way to check is to swap burners with another macine, which would confirm yours not working even in another computer, and proving that another drive in your computer does solve the problem.

I mean if you put another burner in your computer and the problem is solved the the conclusion is that your original burner is at fault and needs to be permanenetly replaced!

Same issue appeared on another pc here , kept droping the ability to read cd's off .

Reset by removing ide cable , and re-insert it , when pc start's , it should have returned ... but may still keep popping off every now and then , and the ide cable procedure will need repeating .

We found the issue was related to a poor solder joint on the motherboard .

Striped pc down , unsoldered ide socket at fault , renewed ide socket , fault has not returned .

    Painfull process .

Holy mother of pearl! Stripping down to the solder. Good golly brainstone. Painful indeed.
