The only decent converter I could find is FoxTab AVI converter.
On the conversion window the default format for the output is avi.
However there is a huge drop down list of formats.
    Here are most of them:
    avi, dvd-mpeg-2ps(dvd vob), mp4 (mpeg1), mp4 (real video), mp3, mp2, vob,

And the ones I've never heard of:
3g2, 3gp, aac, ac3, aiff, amr, asf, ass, au, avmz, dv, .dv, flm, flrc, flv, gif, gxf, h261-264, ipod, m4v, m4v, mkv, mjpeg, mon, mpg, nut, ogg, sox, svcd-mpeg-2 ps-vob, svcd, swf, truehd.

I converted a mp4 to dvd-mpeg-2ps(dvd vob) and it appears not to play on Windows Media Player. I can not get AVI or the dvd-mpeg-2ps(dvd vob) to play on my table top DVD player.

Out of all those formats which ones should play "any where?"

    Thanks.

Use a decent media player on the PC, like MPC or VLC.

A standalone DVD player will play DVD compliant movies that have been authored to the video standard of where you live (NTSC for North America, PAL for most everywhere else).

Only standalone players that are DivX certified will play AVI files created using the DivX or XviD codec.

To create DVD movies and optionally burn the disk, try AVStoDVD.

I used this link and got the 5.9.3.0
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/vista_codec_package.htm

Does it just work in the background?
I wanted to open it, just to see which version.
Everytime I click on the icon, the "installation" process keeps repeating.

So, when I open WMP and add a file, the K-lite will assist, instataneously in finding the correct codec so the file plays?

By the way, before getting the codec package, I had two files on my desktop.
One is an AVI. And WMP will play it, as will Nero Essentials and VLC.
The other one is dvd-mpeg-2ps(dvd vob). Nero and VLC play it fine but WMP will not, even after the codecs. Someone said the "ps" has to be removed. I can not do that, since that format is a set output of the converter. This converter has close to 40 different outputs to choose from. I'm trying to learn which one will play on my pc media players and also on my table top DVD player.

    Thanks.

once you open and installed k-lite it will install the codecs on wmp and give you a list of options for running things in media player or media player classic.once the codecs are installed k-lite doesnt need to run.wmp will automatically find the codecs to use for each file.

My Windows Media PLayer won't play this file, after getting K-Lite.
    dvd-mpeg-2ps(dvd vob).

Someone said the "ps" is the problem. But, my converter has 39 different outputs and there is no way to remove the ps in dvd-mpeg-2ps(dvd vob).
I wanted the format that would play anywhere (table top in-home DVD player, and computer based media players. I thought mpeg2 was it (?)

    Thanks.
