I tried updating it following this website: http://www.freewebs.com/starview-update/

The thing is, I'm not sure anything actually happened. The channels were black, apart from the freeview ones, and I ended up getting codes instead. Is there any significance to this firmware update? I was under the assumption that it would never go black once the codes were changed andit would have the latest codes everyday.

    Please answer!!!!

The codes change 2-3 times a day.
The new firmware will automatically do this when its released which it hasnt yet so keep an eye on the forum and be patient, it'll get sorted.

A new firmware is like a newer version of a computer program. It might have bug fixes, a nice fresh look, different menu's, etc.

With boxes however, the firmware upgrades also has modified code that stops your box form displaying a black screen all the time.

The reason why your box (starview 1?)is displaying no channels apart from the freeview ones, is that there is NO current firmware to deal with the latest spate of key changes and the method VM implemented to deliver such keys.

Now, there's 2 options you have at present ...

    A) Wait for a new firmware to be released for your box
    B) Get a different box that has the latest firmware on it
