Can the Magnetic stuff that emits from speakers damage a HDD? I know that it can damage cd's, so is it safe to assume that it can damage a HDD aswell? I ask because i have a hdd that doesnt work anymore, and it was kept close to my speakers. The HDD was in an xbox, and the xbox is kept about 5 inches from one of my speakers. The HDD is only about 2 years old.
what is in a hd? 2 electric motors, 1 for spin & 1 for moving heads back & forth. what is in electric motor? MAGNET!!!! speakers do not harm cd/dvds, how can it?? there is no magnetic particales on cds, just a plastic disk coated with aluminum which neither is magnetic or attracts magnets.
you only truely cause magnetic damage to a hard drive with one of the superstrong magnets that you find inside them but the only way to get them is by causing extreme physical damge to the drive anyway. Its not actually the disks themselves that get damaged its the chips on the PCB on the underside of the drive. if you mess up just one of these chips your hard drive will never work again (unless you transplant a PCB from an identical drive)
there is or was a chip inside the drive too so replacing the circuit board doesn't alway work as i've tried that.
According to the last information I read about EMI, it would take such a field the strength of those particle accelerators to damage a hard disk drive. Your speakers won't have any effect on a hard disk. Now, a floppy disk, or credit card is another story....those they will damage.
OK, so i guess it just died. I thought that it does damage cds, cause a crappy little subwoofer for a computer i have, has a warning saying to keep away from cds and things like that, and they take no responsibility for damages. And i learned, not to put my wallet on my speakers anymore! Thanks.
