If your mod is of the flashed onboard TSOP kind, then yeah your hard drive would be unlocked...but other than that I think it has to be locked. Not sure about softmods....

If you load an external bios, you do not need the hard drive to be locked to boot, and play games. If you have a softmod, or want to use LIVE, you must have your hard drive locked.

Some chips have built in unlockers, but if yours doesnt, then get configmagic v1.6 from xbins. (careful not to change stuff you dont understand)

Q: Can I boot off a unlocked HDD... With a Retail BIOS (i.e. Firmware)?!?!

A: NO! You can however boot your XBOX™ just fine with any of the Cracked Firmware Images (for Modchips), which are avalible all over the Web (i.e. The 'Ususal Places'),.

As for BFM Firmwares (Boot From Media), (i.e. Softmods), I think you have to runthough the normal Retail Firmware to boot into the BFM Image. So again I beleave the answer to that would also be no. However I'm by no means a Softmod Master. Softmods are timely and hard to maintain and if your not carefull you will Fuxx up your XBOX™ to a point where your going to have to just buy a Modchip anyway!
