I'm a complete newb so apologies before I ask but I use the VLC player so don't need to download any codecs, I'm now wanting to encode some avis to dvd but obvioulsy I have none of the required codecs on my system. My question is can i not install and uninstall the required codecs as and when I need them? Can I do this from say a codec pack etc? Any advice much appreciated.
If you want to do it that way just install the codecs you want. I would avoid packs. While your doing this kinda stuff you might want to get a program called Gspot. It is free and will tell you which codecs you need. On average you shouldn't need that many codecs. The only two extra I have installed on my system is the divx and ac3. It's not often I run into something that won't play.
Cheers mate, I've got gspot its just that I have an avi file that has a codec 'Divx 3 low motion' not on my system but I think if ive read correctly you can't just install it on its own you need the whole divx package? any links you recommend for this that are light for system use.
As far as I know everything comes with the one divx codec. You don't have to install any of the software that comes with it though.
