Hi everybody. I need to back up my Hi8 & vhs tapes and my music cds. I am debating on which dvd burner I should buy. One for my pc or a stand alone dvd burner (not Tivo). Now I know on a stand alone that I won't be able to back up my music cds even though they are not store bought cds unless I can run it just using audio connection straight to a dvd burner but anyway that wasn't my main question. I want to transfer my Hi 8 tapes to a dvd disc. I have Pinnacle and av and s-video input with an adapter so I can run it straight in to my pc, but because I am going through an adapter means it would be better with a stand alone where I can run it straight in with no adapter right. Now getting to my main question. If I decide I only want part of one Hi8 tape and part of another Hi8 tape together on 1 dvd then would I be able pause recording on a stand alone until I switch tapes and then pickup where I left off. I also want to fill up a dvd disc instead of only 15 minutes of recording on it and the rest blank. I'm very sorry for the long message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Yes you can pause while recording. You can also stop a disc and restart recording whenever you want so that your entire disc is filled. Personally I think this is your best option.
