Cannot access internet even though Internet is apparently connected

OK i have a dell computer, windows xp, using bellsouth fast access dsl. Yesterday i couldn't open dvd shrink because of some issue with the computer(lp5)and my virus scanner, avast antivirus. So i turned off avast for a moment, still didn't work. SO i restarted. Now the internet browsers don't work at all. All three(firefox,IE,Google chrome) claim to not be connected to the internet. However my bellsouth box has all the lights on which usually indicates that it has connection. My computer doesn't recognize it though. I was thinking it was a vuris since the registry was blocked( which i've unlocked) DId a boot scan, found some viruses. Still didn't connect when it started. Why is my computer not recognizing the internet connection all of a sudden?

 

Ok I've done virus scans and the one virus that comes up is win32oly

Despite the scans, i am still unable to use the internet and the registyr is still blocked
