Hello. I am new to this forum and really need some help. All I wanted to do was to burn a CD, so I bought Nero 6.6 last night. I have now spent hours trying to get it to burn on CD-R, but it says it requires CD-R/RW (which I do not have). Does anyone know how I can change the requirement from CD-R/RW to just CD-R? I have reinstalled it, and I turned off the multisession thing, and I am ready to return the software and get something simple. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. TOm

Open Nero Start Smart, open Nero Burning Rom, under new compilation choose audio cd, you can fill in the text box if you want, or just choose new. Find your files and drag and drop them from in the file section to your audio compilation, ensure your burner is chosen in the top box. Hit the burn button, on the next screen check your burn speed, and then hit burn. Or you can use the Nero Express, it is somewhat easier, just pick audio cd and then add your files, pick finish and burn.

    Dear Tomnero,
If Nero says cd-r/rw, it means cd-r or cd-rw. Now if you use cd-r, that shouldn't be the problem. So can you be more specific re. the steps that you used which finally led to the problem?

Thank you for the quick responses. I make it through all of the steps up to "Burn," but when I hit the burn button, a new screen pops up and says there is either not a disc in the drive, or I need to change my settings to make it compatible with the requirements. That screen also says the required media is CD-R/RW. I have tried to change most settings (no multisession; don't read the drive first, etc.) but no change. I tried it while trying to make an audio CD and a data CD. I had no such problems with the Nero Express that came with the burner, but has expired. Any possibly easy fixes? Thanks. Tom

I tried a new CD and still no burn. Below is the log showing what happened when I tried to burn, after inserting a brand new Sony CD-RW disc. Would someone take a look and see if this explains my problem? I would really appreciate it. Tom

What programs are running in the background, you need to turn off some of your applications.

My burner is a Mad Dog 4 in 1 I installed about 2 or so years ago, that had worked fine until this. It came with Cyberlink software, and Nero Express, that recently expired. As for what else I am running, I am not sure. I have an 80 gig HD, and 256 of RAM. I left my old 10 gig HD inside and hooked up when I added the larger one. I will gladly turn off whatever I can if that would help. Thanks a lot.

I did uninstall Express first, and now I have uninstalled and re-installed Nero 6.6 three times. But for some reason, it just will not read a blank CD. When I check disc info, it keeps saying the drive is empty, but if I put a CD in the drive that has any writing on already, it can read those CDs (though it tells me to insert a writeable disc. I just don't get it. I look forward to finding out what simple fix there is to this problem. Thanks for your input. Tom

    Dear Tomnero,
First of all, you need to stay calm. Sometimes if you get mad and mess with the burner etc., it'll go nuts too (and I'm speaking from experience)! *_*
Second, did you try to use Nero Burning Rom instead of Nero Express?

    - that doesn't look right, download latest version - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm

    - don't use Express, use the better Burning Rom

    - firmware could well be out of date

    - as arniebear said, you need to free up more memory. Your hard drive is 'swapping' due to no memory left which means you're using virtual memory (ie portion of hard drive)

    - splat!

    - it thinks there's no disc loaded

    - it thinks there's no disc loaded or doesn't like the disc

    - haven't seen a lot of those for years, god i (don't) miss Win98 sometimes!

Well, I installed the new ASPI, and BINGO, it appeared to be burning a CD. I was so excited. Then...something went wrong (log below). Now, for some reason, even though more is going on, it has reverted back to telling me there is no disc. Any new suggestions? I don't understand the memory thing (97% used), and I am not too sure about the firmware. I am very excited about the progress. You guys know you're stuff! Thanks. Tom

    Slow down your burning speed

At least you have some memory, but you still need to close down a few more apps.

Use the Nero info tool and see if you can find out the make of your burner, I have a feeling your firmware is too old and is not handling the media you are giving it. Try another brand of media and see if this will work.

    @TOMNERO -

    - ASPI still looks the same

    - i've highlight ed this again in case anyone knows about firmware for these drives

    - you STILL need to free up more memory. Your hard drive is 'swapping' due to no memory left which means you're using virtual memory (ie portion of hard drive)

    - just a comment, you weren't finalizing the disc

    - CMC make nothing but utter rubbish media, whether it's DVD or CD media

    - drive doesn't like that media

Burn process failed at 40x (6,000 KB/s)[/quote] - slow it down to say 24x

Buy better media but you also gotta free up more memory, your hard disc will be swapping, thus interfering with burning

if possible try upgrading ram to 512meg so windows will run better & will give you more free ram to use for burning

Thanks for the assistance. I'm starting to thing I need to try the firmware update, and I found a flash and firmware update for the MadDog 4 in 1, so I will see if that helps. I just hope I do not make things worse. I'll be back in touch. Thank you. Tom

WE DID IT!! I just finished burning two CDs with my new Nero. Thanks for all of the great suggestions. The problems were solved by updating the burner's firmware (A term I never heard of before this thread). I went to www.mdmm.com/support/docs/FW_Upgrade_Guide.pdf for Mad Dog Multimedia, which erased my old info and re-flashed it. Once I did that and reloaded Nero 6.6, it worked great. Thanks for the great assistance and very helpful website. I hope this info saves someone the headaches I've had this weekend. Tom
