Hi Johnl123 or really anyone who can help.

I found your information extremely helpful as I have been having the same problem with Nero. I get the "Cannot connect trf" message when I try to burn a DVD. Although I have shrink DVD on my computer I am not using it when I encounter the problem. However, that is irrelevant to the question I have now.

I followed the link you sent to uninstall Nero, but I don't know what the seriel number is for my product. I remember buying an external CD burner I think Nero came with that. I sold the burner and I think I gave the CDs away. I still have Nero on my computer though. The following set of directions is from Nero's website in order to get the seriel number.

Please note: First make sure you have your Nero 5/6 serial number to install Nero/Nero Express with. The serial number should look like this:
    15xx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx (Nero 5.x) or
    1Axx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx (Nero 6)
It should be located on the inside of the Nero jewel case, or on the back of the paper sleeve the Nero CD came in.
You can also open Regedit (a program in C:\Windows), and go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ahead\Nero-Burning Rom\Info”
and obtain your Nero 5 or Nero 6 serial number there.

I clicked on "My Computer" and the "C:" I don't have any folders or or documents called "windows." So I typed in C:\Windows and the message said, "Page cannot be displayed." So then, I typed in the whole "C:\Windows\HKEY_LOCAL..." and got the same message - "Page cannot be displayed."

Can you please help me to get the seriel number for the Nero program that I have on my computer.

    Thanks so much.

    Hi StacyB
When you open Nero Smart Start look to the bottom right hand corner. You'll see an icon with a flame in it. Click on that - it will open product center and there's a tab for your serial #.

The other way that Nero describes in in your registry.

    Look in smart start 1st.

If you are unable to locate it where binkie7 stated(mine shows in that location) then you can check out your Nero log, located here

Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt

Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.tx

Serial number is usually at the commencement of each log.

    Thank you Binkie7 and Gwendolin,

Hmm, I don't have a flame in the bottom right hand corner. However, I actually found my seriel number by running my mouse over the Nero name in the top left hand corner when I opened SmartStart. The background then changed to a flame. At that point I was able to left click and the seriel number came up.

Thought I would add this information incase someone else had the same screen I did instead of the one Binkie7 referred to.

    Hi Guys,

I think I know why I had a different screen. I was using a different version of Nero. Different from the one that everyone else was having trouble with when trying to burn DVDs. Unfortunately, what I don't know is, if it was a newer version or an older version. This version did not have the flame in the bottom right hand corner. The name Nero changed to a flame in the top left-hand corner. Are you able to tell me what version that was? Whatever the version, it did give me the "cannot connect trf" message.

Ok, so now I downloaded a different older version (I think) and that is because the newer version doesn't work with DVD shrink.

Problem 1 - I can't tell for sure that I downloaded the correct one because when I click on the flame in the bottom right-hand corner to get the product information I get this error message

    Runtime error
    Program c:/Program Files/Ahead/Nero startsmart/Nerostartsmart exe.
    R6025
    pure virtual function call

Problem 2 - When I start to burn the videos the computer freezes.

I was trying to burn a DVD with about 4G. So, I decided to cut that in half and just did about 2.5G. The burn went smoothly.

Is there anyway for me solve the problem so that I can have video on the entire DVD or am I stuck with just half DVD usage?

A friend of mine has Pinnacle and Pixela software to create DVDs and suggests that I use them too. However, I would still need a program to burn DVDs. So, I'm not really any further ahead of I get those other two program, correct? I sill need Nero to burn the DVDs.

Oh, something else strange. Whenever I enter this website with Internet Explorer I get an error message. It's working fine with Mozilla right now. Any ideas?

    Thanks for all your help.

    Hi StacyB
If you still have the .exe file it will have the version # - will look something like nero 6.6.0.18.exe
    What does yours say?

For the error - uninstall nero - run the clean tool - then reinstall. Need the version though to give you the right clean tool.

How about your pc specs - may help figure out why Nero is freezing.
Right click on 'my computer' then click on properties. In the general tab some basic specs will be here. For now just give the OS, processor & ram info.

Now on the IE vs Firefox - what error message are you getting?
I use Firefox too - much better than ie imho.

    Hi Binkie7,

The version that I am currently using is 6.6.0.18.

    My specs are

    Windows 2000
    AMD Semprong(tm)
    AT/AT Compatible
    1,048,040 RAM

I can't seem to get the error message to come back in IE. I think it was a windows error. I'll keep you posted.

All of you who respond to those of us with problems, is this your job? Or do you enjoy helping us (not that you can't enjoy your job), what I'm trying to say is, or do you do this at your leisure? In reading some of the website rules, it says that we should try to give back to the site and help others. So, I'm thinking that this is something you do in your free time. I've looked at some of the posts from other people. Unfortunately, most of the time it seems that I am more clueless than they are and I would be of no help to them at all. I feel bad about just taking information, but I just don't know enough to help anyone else. I'll keep browsing though, eventually I'll be able to help someone.

Ok let's uninstall Nero (write down the serial # 1st) - run the clean tool and reinstall it.
    Here's some links:
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html
    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2 (recode & vision)
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

You have the pc specs good for dvd backups.

Now when you are doing a backup - no multitasking and shut down any programs you don't need. This may be why you get the hang up on larger files.

Also before you start a new burn do these 2 things - disc cleanup & system defrag.
I think in 2000 they are in a similar place as xp
Try here: start>all programs>accessories>system tools. They are both there.

Now for those who help out - yep just do at our leisure/free time. No $ (dang!) Just trying to help out others when we can.
Don't worry - stick around - it will all click & in no time you'll be helping others too.

If you post a burn log, we can see if you are having any system conflicts. You might have INCD or Roxio installed. The cannot connect to TRF is an error induced by the newer versions of Nero. 6.6.0.18 works fine and is the 6x version to use for the least amount of problems. Your history log should be in this location:
    [bold]Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt[/bold]

These things record all burns, and we only need the last one. The burns are seperated by something like this:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======

    Windows XP 5.1
    IA32-xxxx-xxxx-
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

that was from a Nero 6 log, but 7 looks much like that. Underneath the divider is the operating system, and right below that is the begining of the serial number. When posting a log, just include the last burn log, and [bold]be sure to edit out your serial numbers by typing xxxx over them, or deleting them before posting to the forum.[/bold]
All you do is open the log, go to the last burn or the last divider, copy and paste into you post, and edit out the serial numbers. It may look like gibberish to you, but some of us can understand what is posted. Burn logs tell us if your burner firmware is updated, memory useage, system and device drivers, and a bunch of other stuff that tells us what was going on during that burn, or attempted burn.

Yep, we do this for free, so if our advice is wrong, you get your money back LOL. :) (I/we never try to give bad advice, we want to help, not hurt)
Read and learn, and soon, you will find some area where you can help ppl. AD has lots of forums.
