cannot get a signal on my eurovox

can anyone help me i have just bought a eurovox e500 pvr i scanned through the channels and i keep getting a message bad or no signal i tried updating the filmware and i am still having the same problem. I have a tv signal with the basic channels through virgin media even though i have been dissconnected. i am thinking maybe the signal isnt good enough or am i doing something wrong.
