If you have cable or satellite, you'll run a digital coax or optical cable from cable box or sat box, to the A/V receiver. The only channels that broadcast in 5.1 surround, are HD channels, "Premium" movie channels (HBO, Starz, etc.), and some PPV channels. If you don't have any of these channels, just run the red & white cables from box to A/V receiver.

If you don't have cable box or sat box, your tv must have the red & white audio outputs on back. Connect from those to A/V receiver, and set receiver to Dolby Pro Logic, to hear tv channels in simulated surround.)
