I'm trying to back up my copy of Alexander, the Directors Cut, and running into problems. I have tried at 4 times to rip it with DVD Shrink, ver 3.2, and each time it fails before it gets past 0% with this message:

Then I tried to rip it with DVD Decrypter, ver 3.5.4.0, at least 6 times and kept getting this error, each time before it got past 0%.

Also, the Information window shows Read Errors: 0 (80 Retries)

Is anyone else having trouble with Alexander? Is this just a bad disk or is there some new copy protection I don;t know about? Thanks.

It was a bad disk! Brand new, new played before and it already had a really bad smudge, sticky spot over 25% of the disk. After washing in warm soapy water, it appears to be ripping okay with DVD Decrypter. If you just bought or rented this DVD, check it out carefully before trying to play. Thanks.

I have some problems with alexander too.
Until now (i'm still working on it), I've been able to rip the 1st disk with DVD Shrink ..but I've just tried the second disk with DVD Decrypter and until now I got over 10,000 reading errors (seems on be only) on the VST_02_2.VOB ..I really don't know if everything wiil be ok ..and only asking ..I've put in the settings to ignore reading errors ..can DVD Decrypter recover from errors ..or it ignores it anyways

..if someone knows the best (or a good) online «guide» about DVD ripping ..it will be very appreciated ..we never know enough

..special tools and everything (AnyDVD? VOBBlanker?? IFO editing?? what is working best?? DVD-RB (rebuilder) ??)

    Thanks again
    and have a nice day

I was finally able to rip Disk 1 with DVD Decrypter and burned it with DVD Shrink. However, I haven't had time to watch it yet so I don't know if it came out okay yet. I still don't know how a brand new DVD could have such a bad smudge on it. It was like someone had spilled a sticky drink on it. Maybe glue from the DVD case got on it.

I don't know what's going on but the following error:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
    Failed to read file "F:\"
    Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Is happening alot now. I would reboot and then it will work up to like 43% analyzing on DVD shrink and then crap out. It's happening so much that it's becoming very annoying and I'm wondering if I should just re-do my system.

    @juspassin & dogwood
It sounds like you a bad press - if there are no noticeable scratches, smudges etc. There seems to be alot of that going around. There's no special copy protection on this disc. Also try Decrypter - If decrypter can't do it than exchange it for a new one. Imo - it's the best ripper out there.
As for guides aD has some great ones check out the guides tab. Here's a link to some done by members here:

I agree shuboy00, OMG I don't even know why you guys are wasting your time with that POS movie. Bad acting, too much talking, and wayyyyy too much homesexuality in it. I want my 2h47m of my life back!!

when you see cyclic redundncy in shrink have a look at the movie file at the start you might see movie 1 10mins movie2 20 mins .the rest off the film is sread out on the disc as bit files. try and copy your disc as an image file with nero 9 out off 10 works fine .there is a lot off people taking bits out off the films as the disc gets passed around, and some times your just left with the scrap.
