cannot scan hard disk

I tried to scan the hard disk, but get the message "windows was unable to complete the disk check", my OS is Windows XP Home Edition with sp3. could some one show me how to fix this problem? thank you in advance

 

You could try a read-only scanner like the one below. It won't fix the issues, but it will pinpoint them and give you enough info to do the fix.
