Hi there, I'm not able to start any of my video capture software - PowerVCR II 3.0 or WinDVR3. I installed a Hercules SmartTV card and its drivers on my XP system, but now I get an error message when I try to start either of the those apps, and even my VirtualDubMod crashes. I think the problems are linked to the OLE32.DLL (file version 5.1.2600.118) since that's the module named in all the errors. Any suggestions for a video capture newbie? Thanks :)

Hi, Ole32.dll is a XP SP1 File and there could be a Chance it is Corrupted or something so go here and download a new version and replace it with the One on your PC and see if that helps:
    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?ole32

PS: WinDVR 3.0 is Far and away the Better capture program ,PowerVCR is Rather Old and crap compared to WinDVR 3.0 but you will need a pretty Fast PC to capture Full resolution Mpeg2 with it...And make sure your Card is XP compatible....

Thanks, Minion. I'm quite sure it's the OLE32.DLL on my computer that's causing the problem, since it's mentioned in the other crashed apps error report.

The OLE32.DLL version is the non-SP1 version 5.1.2600.118 from the Security Update 824146. On my other machine (with XP SP1), the OLE32.DLL file version is 5.1.2600.1263.

I already downloaded the OLE from dll-files, thanks :) but I haven't tried it yet. Could it be the fact I don't have XP SP1 installed on the system with the TV card and drivers?

I downloaded the nVIDIA WDM_1.08.exe, since it was mentioned as working for some ppl in another post. I could get the PowerVCR and WinDVR apps to start with the NVTUNEP.INF and NVXBAR.INF drivers installed, but the TV tuner part didn't seem to work...

    Nope, the OLE32.DLL file version 5.1.2600.1106 (from dll-files) doesn't work :(

I might have to install SP1, I guess, because I'm running out of ideas and help. I found some WDM drivers by Illusion & Hope - http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ - which at least got the video working, but no sound as yet.

My system has run XP without SP1 for over a year, but maybe I'll need it to get this TV capture card working. Will report back here soon...

Well, I've found my PC runs perfectly fine without SP1; in fact better than my friends' PCs with it installed. I have a few critical security patches and IE6 SP1, but otherwise all systems - and programs - operate quickly and without error.

But, back to the capture card issue... I spent another late night trying all different combinations of drivers for the Hercules card, and I even got the video and sound working in PowerVCR for a while, just long enough to test the recording ability on the end of a TV broadcast of Ghostbusters. Not bad quality at all. But, it didn't stay installed for long, and I could get it the video and audio to work simultaneously again.

I installed the card in another PC with XP SP1, and the drivers installation behaved even more erratically, and starting a capture app did not even bring up the splash screen.

WinDVR and iuVCR didn't like any of the drivers I tried to install, either.

The Hercules card is going back to the shop tomorrow. Very disappointing. I will try another since I'm keen to capture some TV and video. Second time lucky, I hope!

Well From what I have read about the Hercules TV cards they use a Simple BT878A Decoder Chip which is the Chip they used in the Very First TV Cards 6 years ago and there have Been improvements in the Last Year which Greatly increase the Quality of Video Capture..
Cards Like the Asus TV Tuner and the MSI TV @nywere and some of the newer Leadtech TV Cards use the New 10 Bit decoder Chips which greatly Increase the Quality of Captures and these cards Can be Found for between $50-$75 and would be a Good Option for you....Cheers

Hi, I think I've figured out what's been wrong with my video capture. I took back the Hercules SmartTV card and got a Leadtek WinFast TV 2000 XP Deluxe, installed it and the drivers and... the same errors. However, after searching the Leadtek site, I found the FAQ and the first question refers to the Kazaa Lite Codec pack, whereby installing the 'AAC DirectShow Parsar' will cause problems, possibly with other capture cards/software. I uninstalled my codec pack and reinstalled it without the 'Parsar' feature, and my capture software now works perfectly :) Maybe this will help other people.

You Should NEVER Install ANY Codec Packs...They are Not worth the Trouble they Cause..You should only install the Codecs you need for Compression and something like "FFDShow" should take care of Decodeing of most Formats...

I haven't had any problems with codec packs before now, though I've been using FDDShow for a while now instead of the pack's codecs. I kept the Kazaa pack installed for use with Gordian Know, but I guess FDDShow would do the same thing?

The Problems with them are that some Codecs will decode the same Format as other codecs so when you try to Play a File you will Get a few Codecs trying to decode the same File at once which causes conflicts, Pluss there are a Lot of Hacked codecs that come with Codec Packs and Just Plain Bad codecs which can cause Problems One of these Codecs that everyone should stay away from is "Angel potion codec"
it can cause some Major Playback problems...Cheers

To start any capture software with Windows XP without getting an ole32.dll error, you first need to install XP SP1 (service pack 1) then you need to install Service pack 1.5. Get it at
    http://www.pcwelt.de/downloads/system/system-utilities/36646/

XP SP1.5 fixes the broken ole32.dll that Microsoft had failed to fix with SP1. If you don't want to download the whole 50MB SP1.5 package you could only download and install the cumulative set of hotfixes No 826939 (which is a part of SP1.5) from
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826939

(it's strongly recommended you go the 50MB way!)

My TV card is AverTV studio 303/403, Chipset CX23881 (Philips). This trick should work with any CX2388X chip.

    Hope it helps
