Can somebody tell me whether my old Canon EF lenses are compatible with the new Canon digital SLRs ? Two of them are USM lenses, the other is not.
Hi ricster Your old EF lens mounts are 99% compatible with digital SLR bodies. You should not have any issues using them on a DSLR body. The only point is that since the CMOS or CCD capture device in most (consumer) digital bodies are smaller than the capture plane of film, there is an inbuilt cropping factor that should be taken into account. In most cases this factor is between 1.3 to 1.7 A DSLR with a 1.6X multiplier and a 200mm lens gives the same viewfinder image as a 35mm SLR and a 320mm lens. A DSLR with a 1.6X multiplier and a 17-40mm zoom would give the same viewfinder image as a 28-64mm zoom mounted on a 35mm camera.
hey ricster, perhaps I worded my sentence wrongly. It is not that the 1% is incompatible. Just that due to the cropping factor being present, it is not a 100% 1 to 1 going from a film body to a DSLR body.
