[bold]Getting a backup of chicken little, the free way.........[/bold]

    DVD shrink can't do this one alone, it'll need some help. Download a free ripper/decrypter called DVDFab decrypter from here;

    http://209.172.35.173/download/DVDFabDecrypter29.exe

Use DVDFab to rip the video files to yur HDD, once DVDFab is done, you'll need to process the files thru vobblanker.

    Get vovblanker here:
    http://members.aol.com/posunplugged/jsoto/VobBlanker_2100_exe.zip

On your HDD you should have a VIDEO_TS folder created by DVDFab decrypter, run vobblanker and....choose....

    Input Video Manager (VIDEO_TS.IFO) selection:
Browse to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVDFab and choose it. Vobblanker will load the files and warn you that there are unsupported multiangles in VTS_03_*.VOB and will be skipped, just ok it.

VTS_03_*.VOB represents the main movie and should not be skipped, in the upper half of the window click on to highlight VTS_03_*.VOB and then click the "process" button on the right to change the action from skip to process.

With VTS_03_*.VOB highlighted, look at the bottom half of the window, you should see:

    PGC#
    01 Entry
    02 Entry
    03 Entry

The top entry (01 Entry) represents your movie, the other two need to be blanked.

Click on and highlight 02 Entry and click on the blank button on the right
Click on and highlight 03 Entry and click on the blank button on the right

    Output Folder selection:
For output location just choose a folder to store the files vobblanker will create. I create a folder on my desktop and give it the name of the movie, I then create another folder within that one and name it VIDEO_TS (this is the folder you will direct vobblanker to store the files in).

    example: c:\desktop\Chicken_Little\VIDEO_TS

Once all the selections have been made, press the big PROCESS button and wait unitl it's done.

When it's done open the new video files created by Vobblanker with DVD Shrink and proceed as you normally would.

thread title renamed to something meaningful and multipost closed.

arniebear beat me to it with a paste of loads of chicken little links there as it's getting daft with the nonstop threads each time a new movie comes out.. plus johnl123 has you sorted there too.

Johnl123, Your solution worked like a champ. Thanks for posting a workable solution. Can you explain how this works? What is this type of protection called? Is it new? How does one learn which portion of which vob needs to be blanked?

    According to anydvd:
    [bold]Found & removed Macrovision RipGuard protection![/bold]

Macrovision RipGuard protection along with Sony's ARccOS are the newest (there are some other variations). Since DVD shrink and decrypter are nolonger updated, they alone can't handle this type of copy protection and will need help from either anydvd or DVDFab decrypter, which are updated constantly. If you use anydvd, you shouldn't need to use vobblanker.

Vobblanker can do so much more than just how it's being used here, but in this case it's used to filter out invalid data structure, invalid navigation or any left over dummy cells that DVDFab left behind and will give DVD shrink trouble when trying to open the files if not processed thru vobblanker first.

    Practice using it.
Usually once you load the VIDEO_TS.IFO all you need to do is just press the PROCESS button and let blanker do its thing automatically, but in the case of chicken little, the movie had three angles associated with it in VTS_03_*.VOB and since vobblanker does not provide multiangle support, it wanted to skip it when trying to process it (that would be skipping the entire movie). A good way to check and make sure all is well is to look at the movie's initial and final size (in MB), initial will be approx 7MB and the final approx 4.3MB, if the final size is very small, then you know something is wrong and you need to take a closer look at the is being processed and what is being skipped.

Note: You can also preview any VTS and PGC's associated with it to check and see what's bogus and what's legit.

    Cheers
    John.

I'm disappointed that DVD shrink is no longer updated as I have almost exclusively used it with very few failures. I even tried this title with shrink and AnyDVD (in the background, older release) and, again, it errored out. I may end up becoming more familier with VOB blanker but hate the thought of it becoming a 2 phase process--to remove the protection then to shrink it to fit.

May need to update anyDVD if I want to still use DVDshrink to keep it a 1 phase process. I appreciate the 'surgical' process that VOB Blanker allows one to do but I would not be certain about what is good and what is not. Are you saying that normally, one just processes the disk without manually blanking portions?

    @davidb

If you have AnyDVD the newest version, then use the ripper that is now incorporated into the program. If you use this you will not have a need to use VobBlanker as it will do the same thing.

Yes, usually all you should have to do is load the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, choose an output loaction and press the process button, vobblanker will do what it needs to do automatically. But, always look at the movie's initial and final size (in MB), initial will be approx 7MB and the final approx 4.3MB, if the final size is very small, then you know something is wrong and you need to take a closer look at what is being processed and what is being skipped, if in doubt just press the "Proc.ALL" button and you should be ok.

As arniebear stated, the ripper now included with anydvd can also be a very good tool for DVDs that are a pain to backup. It is identical to FixVTS, but instead of fixing problems "in place" it copies the files to your harddisk directly from the source DVD. It fixes the problems while the files are copied.
