I have an hl-dt-st dvdram gsa 4040b ,which I have used successfully for many months.I usually use dvd shrink and B's recorder gold Recently all burning attempts on write disks of various sorts stop at 1 % of the rcording stage with the hardware error message. However I can still burn onto dvd-rw.I'm not aware of having changed anything and have tried to clean the dvd burner.Has it died on me ?
You may want to switch to a different burning program to see if the problem still occurs. I have not used B's in a long time. As I recall, I had problems with that program. You may want to try burning with DVD Decrypter. Shrink can be set up to open Decrypter automatically to start the burn process. If the problem still occurs then we will have an idea of what is and is not causing it.
sorry but I dont quite understand that. I have now downloaded dvd decrypter which wants to decrypt info from the source [the dvd burner ] to the source ,the hard drive .I cant see how to use this to burn.
Don't let the name of the program throw you off. DVD Decrypter can burn as well as decrypt. The trick here is to use DVD Shrink first. You tell Shrink to use Decrypter to burn with. You will not even have to open Decrypter. Shrink will do that at the correct time....but only if you set Shrink properly. To set Shrink up to use Decrypter try this. Open your movie in DVD Shrink. Do all the things you normally do with Shrink, select your audio etc. When that is done you normally select "Backup!" to start the encoding process. So when you are ready, select "Backup!" and the Backup DVD menu opens. The first tab is your Target Device tab. Find the "Select backup target" dropdown menu. From this menu select "Create ISO image file: ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter." Make sure this is what now appears as your backup target... Once that is done, put in your blank DVD and select OK... Shrink will now open Decrypter at the correct time (after the encoding process) and burn your DVD.
Thanks for the very clear instructions. However, here's the next problem .I followed the instructions x3 but on each occasion the programme stopped at 1-5 % with the same error message "dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue, failed to read file "D:|" . Data error {cyclical redundancy check } " I hope that means something to you !
That is a very common error. The primary cause is a scratch or dirt or some defect with the source disc. The solution of course is to try and clean the thing. Sometimes however you get a movie that can't be decrypted by Shrink because of a newer type of copy protection that is coming out. In this case you would do things a bit differently.... Before we get into that though I would really like you to try and burn another movie using the method I described earlier. Just as it is confusing to try to do too many things at once, I am reluctant to tell you a second procedure until you have figured out the first one. That is why I would like you to try a different movie. If you have the original DVD of a movie you have copied before try it again. A small trick to not actually burn another copy....just don't put in a blank DVD. Some trick, eh? _________________________________________________________________ The Second Procedure For Dealing With Cyclic Redundancy Check Errors Caused By "Advanced" Copy Protection Schemes First a couple of points.... The first procedure described how to use Shrink to open Decrypter to burn your movie. Fine, that's just one of DVD Decrypter's uses...it has a few more. DVD Decrypter does, as it's name says, decryption of copy protected DVDs. And it does it better than DVD Shrink, which is a bit outdated. The first thing you need to do is figure out why you are getting a Cyclic Redundancy Check error. Obviously if the DVD looks all beat up and dirty then that's a pretty good indication of where the problem lies. If it is clean and un-scratched, then you just mignt have one of the few movies that use the new copy protection. We here at Afterdawn pretty much know which movies have it and which ones don't, so let us know the name of the movie and we can figure out that for you. You can even try entering the name of the movie into AD's search function and see if you get any hits. Ok, here it is.... How to Decrypt with Decrypter and then Shrink with Shrink and then burn the whole thing with Decrypter! Do you know how to make a folder? Good. Go ahead and make one. Name it "My friggin movie" or whatever you want. Just remember where you put it. Put it on your desktop if you need to. Put your movie in your computer and open DVD Decrypter. Your movie is in your source drive, find it here.... If you see this RCE screen, just follow the instructions and click OK. Oops, We need to do this in "file" mode. Lets just check that it is in the mode we want here... Now you need to find that folder you made earlier. Here it is... OK, you have your Source ready to go and your Destination set, so start the process by clicking on this green arrow. And the process begins! 4 minutes into the process and the screen looks like this. When completed, Decrypter plays it's little jingle and shows this. Now that Decrypter has finished saving your movie in it's decrypted form, you are ready to Shrink the files. Decrypter can't compress so we need Shrink to do this. Open Shrink, Instead of selecting "Open Disc", select "Open Files". Browse for the Decrypter created files (They will be in the folder you made) and proceed as usual, including using the previously mentioned "Burning With Decrypter" method. Cheers, Frank
No success unfortunately.I tried all that you suggested . The failure continues to occur just as the burning process is initiated.However I have after following your instructions I came up against a different error message with more information I/O error device {1:0:0 ] HL-DT-ST dvdram gsa-4040b a300 [d:\] [ata] scsistatus 0x02 interpretation ,check condition cdb: 2a 00 00 00 08 00 00 00 20 00 interpretation [write] 10 sectors 2048-2079 sense area: 70 00 04 00 00 00 00 10 35 01 04 0e 09 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 interpretation tracking servo failure
I've just tried again with a dvd-rw and with dvd decrypter I can see the burning process which keeps failing and retrying repeatedly but does manage to chug through it albeit very slowly. The dvd write only discs still fail in the first 1-5 % and don't continue Malcolm
This is not a good error message: interpretation tracking servo failure This is a hardware failiure inside your burner. The tracking servo is the mechanism which "aims" the laser at the track on the blank DVD. It may just be dust or dirt in the mechanism and you may be able to take the thing apart and clean it. I would really concider just replacing it though.
