I'm trying to burn a data DVD with Nero 6 (6.3.1.25)
In the instructions, it says to follow the same procedures as for a CD. The compilation window only gives options for : CD ROM (ISO), AUDIO CD, MIXED MODE CD, ......down to.....CD ROM (UDF/ISO) - Assuming the selections apply for DVD as well I followed the instructions. I set up the compilation for ISO (I want to burn a combination of music, pictures, text files, etc) - I chose my DVD recorder (NEC ND-3550A) from the "Choose a Recorder" window. I am using TDK 16X DVD-R discs and my computer has an AMD 500 mhz processor, 384 memory, under the XP Home OS.

After inserting a blank DVD disc into the NEC and selecting "Burn" I get this:

"Sorry your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make it compatible with the current disc" Disc required for the compilation: CD-R/RW

So how do you get the software to recognize the DVD disc, it recognizes the recorder, and the only options when you set up the compilation are all CD based......

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give!

    Regards,

    Paul Rasmussen

    @citizen0

When you open Burning Rom, in the top left hand corner there is a drop down menu...make sure you've selected DVD and not CD as the type of backup you need to make.

Your choices should then be...DVD (ISO), DVD copy, DVD-video, DVD-ROM (boot), DVD-ROM (udf/iso) and DVD-ROM (udf).

    LOCOENG,

Thanks! Man, do I feel stupid! I guess I let myself get flustered too quickly with the whole thing as I'm also dealing with an "infestation" of spyware via trojan horses that I can't seem to get rid of. Hence, I need to burn quite alot of stuff and with this new DVD drive I can now proceed with reformatting the Hard drive....
    Thanks again!

    No problem...

Download Hijack this and post a log in the spyware removal forum here at AD and the locals in that forum will get you bug free in no time.

I can also point you in the right direction of some modified firmware for your NEC drive that will remove riplock, allow bitsetting and make your drive rpc free...if you are interested let me know.

    LOCOENG,

Thanks for the suggestions. I've downloaded Hijack This and will post the log file in the Spyware Forum.

I'm definitely interested in the firmware upgrade for the NEC.
What exactly is "riplock", "bitsetting" and "rpc"?

Also, thanks to you pointing me to the little drop down window, I've burnt my first DVD (ISO) disc and the burn completed with this statement:
"Burn process completed successfully with warnings"

What does it mean? I tried looking at the log but that's a bit like a blind man reading a newspaper at this point....lol

I've copied the log file here. Is there any way you can tell me if the "warnings" alluded to in the burn window are detailed here?

Nero is a bit old...6.6.0.18 can be found here: http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

Where is your data coming from?

You are running a little short on resources, don't multitask...especially during burns. The low memory could also have bearing on the previous source data error.

The latest firmware with all the bells and whistles is 1.Y6 and can be found here: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3550/

You will also need binflash (win32 GUI v1.28) to help you flash your drive correctly, it can be found here: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

Read the instruction thouroughly and follow them explicitly...

    RPC: http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/rpc-1.cfm
    riplock: http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/riplock.cfm
    bitsetting/booktyping: http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

Basically, the above items just make your drive more compatable and more effecient. RPC makes your drive region free. Riplock removed allowed my NEC to rip at 12X and sometimes faster, rather than 6-8X without the feature. Booktyping in a nutshell is a way of writing to DVD-R discs that trick your DVD player into thinking it reading a DVD-ROM (store bought movie), thus making the compatability with different set top players better.

Hope this helps and good luck.

    Locoeng,

Thanks for the links! I had intended to upgrade to Nero 6.6.0.18 but wanted to take care of the spyware thing first.

Can only write at 6x instead of 16x,
because speed of source data is too slow

I only had Nero running at the time of the burn.

Thanks!, I will follow your suggestions for the Firmware upgrade and
also the RPC, Riplock and Bitsetting. You've been really helpful and very patient....thanks again!

Active virus protection, open internet connection, CPU monitoring apps etc. also can eat up RAM. DMA is on for your HDD, so something else is slowing the data down...work on getting your system clean and this error may go away. In the mean time, if you have an active internet connection, disable it and turn off your anti-virus protection.

    LOCOENG,

Most likely it was my antivirus, which I didn't disable beforehand. I have dial-up (aghhhh) so that's not an active connection. What would be an example of an CPU monitoring application?

Thanks for all of your suggestions, I re-formatted my computer as it seemed the only way of absolutely knowing nothings lurking in the background such as keystroke viruses, etc.

    Regards

What I meant by CPU monitors was a program or suite that keeps an eye on HDD usage, RAM monitoring etc. Programs that lurk in the background like a watchdog looking at all the different aspects of your system. You would know if you had one, so I'm guessing that you don't.

    Locoeng,

I see a newer version (6.6.1.4) on the site than the one you recommended (6.6.0.18). Do you know if one performs better than the other?
Is there any version of Nero 6 that has a DVD player built in?
I want to avoid putting more programs on my drive than necessary. I have a copy of Power DVD (XP4) but would rather use Nero if any version 6 has it and the quality is as good as Power DVD.

    Thanks!

I've gotten out of the loop a little and don't know if the latest version of Nero is buggy or not, that it why I gave you a link to 6.6.0.18 because I know it to be a bug free working version. I use Nero 7 and it comes with Nero Showtime and is comprible to PowerDVD. Not sure if 6.6.0.18 has the same feature becuase I've never used it.
