    I can't burn using Nero 6.6.016
Keep getting "illegal disc" and "could not perform end of disc at once"
Seems like this a common problem. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    @praharyan, rempve that serial# first.

A quick look at the log shows:

    1:
    ************************************************
    Nero Version: 6.6.0.16
    ************************************************
Your version is out of date, use the nero general cleantool and uninstall ver 6.6.0.16 and install the more stable/reliable ver 6.6.0.18, do not install INCD.

    nero clean tool link:
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html

    6.6.0.18 updates links:
    http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

    Note:
    *******************************************************************
    Recorder: <PHILIPS DVD+RW SDVD6004> Version: 1.06 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.0.16
    *******************************************************************
Your burner's firmware is upto date @1.06, no problem there.

    2:
    ********************************************************************
DiskPeripheral : HITACHI_DK23FB-60 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
    ********************************************************************
Your HDD seems to be set for the slower PIO mode, enable DMA for this device. Here's how:
    http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm

    3:
    ********************************************************************
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2275935 (505:45.60, 4445MB)
    ********************************************************************
Shrink should be producing smaller files to keep from burning too close to the outer edge of the disk where write error can occur, change the output files size to 4300. In shrink goto: edit---preferences, change to custom and enter a value of 4300.

    4:

    *********************************************************************
This could mean that the recorder might not like the media you're using, try another brand like verbatims.

5: Try burning no slower that 4x and no greater than 8X.

    6: Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
This could indicate that there is a possible aspi problem like a corrupt layer, When you reinstall the new version of nero this should go away since nero comes with it's own aspi layer.

Also there's no harm in installing additional ASPI drivers since it appears that drive also requires them for burning as shown here:

    File 'Drivers\atapi.sys': Ver=5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158), size=95360 bytes, created 8/4/2004 6:59:42 AM (Adapter driver for rec)

Try using force aspi, you can get the drivers here with instructions.

Try freeing up more resources for Nero to complete its task. Disable processes that are not needed to run while you use Nero. Make sure you do not disable system processes as that could cause your computer to crash...

Thanks a lot. I've installed the newer version of nero, changed the setting in shrink, but my drive doesn't seem to want to change to DMA mode. My F: drive is for my cd/dvd rom, which from that page you directed me to shows my secondary drive is the corresponding drive. That is in DMA mode. Should my primary drive be in DMA mode as well? I really appreciate this help!

    praharyan,

    ********************************************************************
DiskPeripheral : HITACHI_DK23FB-60 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
    ********************************************************************
Enable DMA for this device, if you don't it will slow down the entire process. Here's how:
    http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/

    here:
    ******************************************************************
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286127 (508:01.52, 4465MB)
    *******************************************************************
You state you changed the setting in shrink for output files sizes of 4300MB, but it doesn't appear to be the case here according to the Last address to be written info (4465MB).

    here:
    ********************************************************************

This might suggest that there's a problem with the burner, if there is, then a replacement is the solution.

Have you tried using a different brand of media? Before giving up on that drive, I would suggest you try burning to SONY DVD+R media since I know its of good quality and made in japan, or even try Verbatim disks.

Yeah, the disc I tried to burn was copied on shrink using the previous setting. I'll try and burn it again on the new setting at 4300 MB. As for my primary channel. I tried changing it to DMA mode with no luck. My secondary channel is DMA Ultra Mode 2. Is there another way to change the primary channel to DMA mode?

Try right clicking on the primary IDE channel and choose uninstall. Reboot the PC for the change to take effect, go back and recheck, set to DMA if it hasn't been already, reboot and check again.

I reinstalled my driver and set to DMA Ultra Mode 5. It seems to function fine and its burning at twice the speed. Thank you guys so much for your help!!! And I'm seriously impressed with how fast you give answers to questions!

Apparently, I spoke too soon. I went to burn again and noticed it was burning slower than last time. Seems my computer reverted back to PIO mode. How can I keep it permanently in DMA mode?

It's not clear, but make sure your hard drive and burner are not sharing (connected to) the same IDE channel. Try connecting the drives to different IDE channels, then reboot and they should be dectected and hopefully set correctly.

Please read this short article by microsoft:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/ide-dma.mspx

Basically, Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device. Such errors could indicate imminent hardware failure.

I was encountering this problem with one of my drives, soon after it ended up failing.

As indicated above from the nero log:

    here:
    ********************************************************************
    TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
    Sense Key: 0x04 (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR)
    ********************************************************************

So, burning failure again. I'm about to just accept that the dvd drive is a failure. I bought it only two months ago though. here is the last log file. And how can i see if their is a conflict in the IDE channels?

Your IDE info looks ok now.

Before you give up on that drive, I would seriously consider trying a different brand of media.

    Here: according to you most recent log, the only problem I see is;
    *********************************************************************
    TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
    *********************************************************************

What ever brand of media you're using, the burner just doesn't like it, it seems to be very inconsistant in burning correctly to it. Try using Sony DVD+R disks from Staples or where ever you can find them, they're manufactured in japan, I use them with all the time and haven't had any problems. Lets try and rule out the media before suspecting the drive.

ok, I tried burning with Verbatim Advanced AZO+ dvd and it still failed. When I first bought the drive, I burned with SONY dvds and didn't have a problem, but I've found it hard to find them here in Prague. Also, why can I only seem to burn at 2.4x, which is quite slow? Here's the log file trying with the Verbatim:

The disks you're using "Verbatim Advanced AZO+ dvd" are disks that I've also used and in my opinion are pretty darn good, so no problem there. The 2.4x speed that your seeing is what the burner defaults to if it's having a problem writing to the disk.

At this point I would start to suspect a possible problem with the burner, getting a new one looks to be the solution here. Do some research and get your self a good reliable one (they're not that expensive nowadays).
