Can anyone please help? Up until about a week ago i was able to burn DVD's ok until i upgraded my Nero. Everything works ok with shrink, then i put in a blank DVD to burn with Nero and i get the following failed burn log. I've unistalled Shrink, then reinstalled. I've used the cleanup tool to remove Nero and then reinstalled (even tried version 7 but read the forum and I see that doesn't work either!). If i use Nero 6.0, will that work? Don't know where to get the download of this from, can't find it anywhere? Wish i hadn't upgraded now!! Is it possible my firmware needs updated? Any help would be much appreciated, here is the log:

ASPI layer is corrupted, try this, version 4.71 from here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm

To be successful in burning you need a minimum of 512 meg RAM, I suggest you upgrade to 512meg in the meantime shut down all unnecessary progs including spyware and dont multitask while burning

I would re set this to 4300, you are burning too close to the dege of the disc.

you are trying to burn too fast, slow to 4X

Your burner doesn't like your media, try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden

Thanks for info Gwendolin. Apologies again for the other thread.

I'll try an answer your questions:

    In reference to:
    ************************************
    Physical memory : 191MB (196080kB)
    Free physical memory: 64MB (65884kB)
    Memory in use : 66 %
    *************************************
This refers to your PCs physical memory (memory sticks/modules), more memory can be added simply by adding additional memory sticks to try and bring it up to atleast 512MB (this is what should be changed/increased).

Virtual memory (sometimes refered to as a page file) is temporary space on your hard drive, this is often used by applications to temporarily store info and can be changed by going to device manager and clicking on the performance tab.

    As shown here:
    ********************************************************************
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)
    ********************************************************************
You're burning too close to the disk's outer edge, this is typically not a good prcatice since some media can't handle it and so write error will occur. To prevent this set DVDshrink or nero recode to produce output files sizes of 4300MB. In shrink goto: edit-->preferences, choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300 (this is what gwendolin is refering to).

    Here:
    ****************************************************************
    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
    ****************************************************************
This is a sure sign that your burner is unhappy with your choice of media you're using, so to try and correct this, it was suggested that you try using another brand of better quality like Verbatims (I like Sony DVD+R disks there made in japan and work well for me), no need to download anything just go to the store and look for them there.

The other possibility in an effort to correct this is getting a firmware update, in order to do this I would need to know a little bit more about your burner. The NEC website shows a current firmware version of 2.18, you can check it out here:

    http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/dl.asp

The version displayed by your log shows that you have version 2.54, which could mean that the drive is an oem. How did you get the drive, is it an Iodata OEM, fujitsu OEM, Mad Dog OEM, or a Dell OEM ?

I've managed to change the output file size in shrink to 4300MB. Thanks.

I'll have another try using better media and see what the outcome is? If my version 2.54 is an OEM drive (i'm not exactly sure if it is or not?) then the update link you showed says

'The above NEC firmware upgrades should not be used with external USB / FireWire drives or with OEM drives from HP, DELL, Medion, Fujitsu, Siemens, Gateway, or any other OEM manufacturer. If you wish to update the firmware on an OEM drive, please contact the dealer or manufacturer.'

How do i find out if its an OEM drive?

    Thanks

    The site states:
"If you wish to update the firmware on an OEM drive, please contact the dealer or manufacturer"

Is your PC a Gateway, Dell, etc.
From what manfacturer did you purchase it from, or put your system together?

To be sure, contact the manufacturer of the PC and ask.

I did some checking and the correct update for that drive may very well be version 2.18, I wasn't able to find anything that stated otherwise, it's up to you to update (I would, but that's me). I do suggest you contact the manufacturer and make sure if there's any doubt in your mind (you should have a 1-800 # you can call).

Here is the drive on the packardbell site, but they appear to offer no support for it:

As Johnl123 said, your firmware should be updated, but it is not without risks.

That being said, the drive I have is an OEM as well. When I flashed my drive with my new firmware, everything worked fine.

    Thanks all for the help!

I'll try better media in the first instance when burning and if this does not rectify the problem then i'll update the firmware as suggested and see if this makes any difference.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm still having problems with burning with Nero 6.6.0.18 and DVD Shrink. I'm now using Verbatim media as suggested but with no luck. Also, when i'm burning the log says 8x speed but i changed the setting in my Nero to 4x speed? Here is the latest log, can anyone help?

I see two problems which may be related..............

    here:
    ********************************************************************
    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
    Sense Code: 0x73
    Sense Qual: 0x03
    CDB Data: 0x2A 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x20 0x00 0x00 0x00

    0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x73 0x03
    *********************************************************************
Your burner is just having a problem with recognizing the verbatim disks, at this point I would recommend trying the frimware update suggested above. You can have the best possible media in the world, but if your burner doesn't have a write strategy for it, it's useless, that's why it's it important to keep the firmware upto date.

    here:
    *********************************************************************
    18:32:29 #24 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
    Power calibration error
    *********************************************************************
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD. During the write process, it continues to do this test to get the best write/burn throughout the whole CD (called Running Optimum Power Calibration). This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" the cause will be either poor media, poor power, firmware out of date, or a defective recorder.

    Try:
This error can be caused in conjunction with some (cheap) medias, try to burn at a lower speed or switch to another brand of discs.
The media your using isn't liked as suggested here by the log:
    "Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)"

Update the firmware of your recorder as suggested.

Make sure your burner is connected to the secondary IDE port/channel as master and set to deliver UDMA-2, keep it on a ATA 100 bus 40 pin cable avoiding fast ATA 133/166/233 and 266.

Try different configurations, such as connecting your CD-ROM drive to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

Uninstall nero from your sytem using the general cleantool, then reinstall version 7.0.1.4b (with out nero's INCD).

Make sure your mother boards chipst drivers are upto date, also make sure you're using Microsoft's standard IDE drivers as I believe they do the best job.

Make sure you don't have more than one installed burning application, this can sometimes cause problems (some software apps replace ASPI driver by their own) so install only one, if using nero then the one that comes with it is sufficient.

As also suggested, you can deactivate for test (only with Windows XP) "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", go to menu "start" > "settings" > "administration" > "services", search "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", rightclick and deactivate "starttyp".

If all fails, get a new burner.

    @john

Thanks. I'll give the firmware update a go first of all and see how it goes.

I can't find the file K251GN81.exe on my system to then follow the instructions? - all i have is the readme guide? The drive is currently configured as a 'slave' and i'm not sure if this is causing problems? I see from the guide that it only asks you to disable the 'slave' if its currently configured as 'master'
