I have a Panasonic TV and HP notebook. I've seen in shops laptops connected to tv's and was trying to do this at home but it doesn't work for me and I don't know where I am going wrong. I have looked on this forum and it advises to use a HDMI lead to connect the 2 which I have done. My laptop registers that the tv is connected and the tv automatically changes to EC/HDMI1 screen but there is no picture (the screen stays black)or sound. I have been trying for the last 2 weeks to achieve this and I think I am trying to do the impossible....can someone please advise if I can do this and how.

The setup sounds good. The only thing I can think of based on your description is the part on the computer where you tell the computer to display on the tv (you didn't mention doing that). Most HP laptops can do it with a key combination of fn and f4.

I believe you have to send the sound separately to the tv with another cable.

I've have this setup, connect your hp to the TV via hdmi (in hdmi 2 slot at the back of the tv). Press fn and F4 on the hp. Then on the tv remote press TV/AV. you should get a black screen with HDMI1 at the top left and the coloured boxes at the bottom. Press blue button on the remote to switch between hdmi1/2 source. You should see the lappy desktop on the tv.
That's how mine works, although I can't seem to get the aspect ratio working.

Thank you Jimmyo & nownthen for taking the time to post much appreciated.
I've tried the fn & f4 in the sequences until the picture came on the tv screen but it stayed on for a split second then goes off again. So i tried playing with the resolution (on the displays settings and on the NVIDIA control panel on the lappy) and the lappy appears on the tv but doesn't stay on the tv for long and the picture when it does come on is either bright red or pink.
