I have a laptop running XP Home, 256Mb RAM, Celeron, 40 Gb HDD.
My Canon Sureshot S1 IS camera won't download photos anymore.
I used to use the Camera/Scanner wizard to do this.
I have recently installed all the accompanying software that came with the camera for the first time since a rebuild in July. Since then, I can no longer download the photos from anywhere - wizard, explorer, etc.
    Symptoms...
When the camera is connected, the autoplay dialogue pops up but is empty.
If the camera is connected, windows explorer takes an eternity to launch. When it does, the camera shows as a digital camera in the folders pane but shows no contents.
    What I've tried so far...
The camera works OK on another pc and just works simply in windows explorer - I can see that it does have files on it.
Removed the camera from the device manager and let the the PC detect the camera again with the standard driver - no go!!!
Downloaded a new driver from Canon's website and installed it - same!!
Uninstalled all the camera software - same!!

A good way to prove your software , would be to download the Free Trial version of Paint Shop Pro and try to use it to acquire the photos in your Camera -- It has an IMPORT feature for camera and scanners. You can use the Paint Shop Pro after to fix your photos. It's much better then the Canon Software.

I have uninstalled all the Canon software and that's all I am using now.

    Thanks - I'll try that.
In the meantime, I was able to get the photos from the camera by removing the Compact Flash card and putting in the PCMCIA slot of the laptop. That worked OK. So the issue seems to be with the USB type interface.

I find that the best way to copy files from camera to PC is to install NONE of the canera software. Simply plug the camera in, power it up, it will appear in Explorer as a hard drive, drag the images to the directory / folder of your choice and then use the software of your choice to edit them.
i use photoshop cs2 but you can use Nero photosnap or any number of program that ate to be found on most systemse.

Depends on your camera. I have a Sony DSC-H1, I had to install the USB drivers for the camera. Im running XP Professional.

XP SP@ with all updates. Camera is Olympus c8080wz 8MP EVF
I copy RAW (OLY) files directly to hdd from camera using draw & drop in windows explorer. I support a number of cameras fron entry level Kodak (the least said the better) to Fujis, several model olys, Nikon 5400. The only camera I cant treat as a removable drive is the Kodak!
I find the camera software a nusiance as it wants to take over the management of my system, a no no.
I have never needed a driver for the camera.
A $20 Austn card reader will allow you to download directly from the card CF? or SD? to your hdd. Plain sailing from there on.
