Okay here is my story.... My laptop is hooked up to a router which is hooked up to the cable modem. My friends desktop pc is also connected to the router. Our internet connection was fine until my friend upgraded Windows XP to Windows Vista. Now when I put in the ethernet cable in my laptop it says local access only, the same for my friend. What I fail to understand is what is happening?? And if he upgraded to Vista, why does that affect me? I mean we are both hooked up to the same router but I thought the cable connection splits so whats the deal? By the way, my laptop's operating system was Windows Vista from the start and when we first got the router, it was hooked up to my friends desktop pc first, then I just hooked up to it with a cable. If this means anything.
Work with only one pluged in at a time for now. Be sure your router is turned on by it's internal software, try without router involved, run internet setup wizard.
What router are you using? Have you checked the settings on the router? It could be any number of things preventing access to the net for example you can disable any pc from accessing the internet by setting filters in the router. As the previous poster stated have you tried pulling the router off and just using the modem to verify that it is working correctly?
do a factory reset on the router did you clone the mac address when you had it working on xp are you using the same mac address now? different ethernet outlets have different mac addresses
I did check the internet without the router and it is working. My router is a LINKSYS Wireless-B 802.11b 2.4 GHz model number BEFW11S4. I noticed that the internet led light is blinking on the router when I link the cable modem to it. I googled it and didn't really come up with any solutions. I think the problem might be that for some reason the router doesn't respond with the cable modem. Does anyone know what is going on?
ok try this link it may help you with your problem. Check out your firmware revision that could be part of it. These routers were a little flaky from what I remember of them.
Thank you to all!! It works now. All I had to do was to change the wire that went from the cable modem to the router.
