Hey guys, new to this site and was wondering if some of you computer savy people can help me out...my laptop at home will not let me on-line (says windows explorer as encountered a problem and must shut down) and my mcaffee security center is disabled and will not let me run it...it is also disabling my dell support, with the same message as above poping up...since i cant get online, i cannot dl and run some of these programs that you all are talking about to fight virus...any suggestions, ideas??

also, i do have a desktop that i am trying to "clean" completely and reinstall all my software, which, when done, will be able to go online...do i just reformat the "cd" drive and use my xp disk?? thanks for your help

    Welcome to Ad :)
This one may be a little tough to figure out on the laptop. Do you have a thumb drive? if not then CD's that you can burn to? The problem with most of the software that we suggest is that it needs to be updated before it will work properly. However, there is one application that comes with the updates as you install it. It is called CCleaner and it is a very good tool for cleaning your registry and many temporary files on you system. Be sure to read how to work it to insure that you clean the computer properly. Here is the home page: http://www.ccleaner.com/

There is another program that you may download as well. It is called HijackThis. You may download that here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Now I want you to boot into safe mode by pressing F8 repeatedly on startup of the laptop. You will be given an options menu. Select safe mode. Install both programs. Run CCleaner first cleaning both the cleaner and the registry sweep. Then run HjT (HijackThis), but only run it in scan only. Do not tell it to fix objects. Copy the file of what it finds and then post it here. I will have a look at it.

As far as the other machine you are wanting to clean completely, all you have to do is put in the XP CD and tell it to format the C: drive before installing it again. That is if you want to remove everything. You may not want to re-install the OS when I can get it cleaned for you. That is up to you.
